Our October Surprise this year was to do some topo work on a road up in the mountains that’s going to be designed this winter. This is on a forest highway that sometimes gets snowed-in by Halloween. We lucked out but, judging from the weather that just rolled in, it may be snowed in by tomorrow morning–

The project is in this vicinity:

We used all the weapons in our quiver for this one:

Nearby we found an old solar ephemeris:

And some modern art:

Early in October the forecast didn't look promising

but the snow receded as the leaves fell off the willows and we completed the project

We lucked out on this one, unlike this dude...

Reason No. 1 why I don't work out there: I'd end up taking a fly rod and/or a bird dog with me every where I went and never get anything done.

Edit - on second thought, where do I send my resume?

Nice.
I can't imagine what it's like to survey without constantly worrying about being run over by some sort of construction equipment. 😉

Now there's a

> GOOD yellow jacket

I agree wholeheartedly. Going to leave it on the radiator as a warning to all of its ill tempered kin.

Aye, Derek. Or maybe two hours time.

Cam from Mt. Bachelor ski resort about 5 miles away:

Cam on one of the Cascade Mtn. passes which is 600 feet lower than our project area:

We beat the snow race by 24 hours. Phew. Bring it on, winter.

(Edit - it just started spitting snow in town right now and I still need to mow the lawn.)

Check craigslist for Bend, OR. There is currently an opening in town.

I'm glad you pointed that out Mark. There are actually two surveyor listings here in town. It's good to see. Survey work has been somewhat on the upswing locally for the last 6+ months. 6 years ago nobody could fill all of their positions they needed. There was too much work and not enough surveyors. Seems like another lifetime ago.
