With my Getac V200, I can now enjoy the best office in the world - field. With the availability of USB broadband, I can communicate with my clients very effectively.
Ron...
If we ever get together for an adult beverage or two, I will have to tell you about Kaligula's (yes with a K) in Chi?in?u Moldova. Looking forward to a couple of your stories as well!

> If I traveled more, it would be another story. Once you are more than 15 minutes from the office it would be essential.
And there you have it, I am almost NEVER within 15 minutes of the office, so it depends 🙂

Toughbook? Hmmm...?
Sorry Brad...I mean't to say Panasonic. It was a pretty good laptop.
I really must be a dinosaur. I never take my laptop with me, unless I'm working out of town. In which case I use it just to download my days data, then surf the internet and relax.
However, I regularly do complete same day surveys the old fashioned way. Just your typical lot survey, 1-5 acre, even bigger surveys. I make a sketch of the job with point numbers. I inverse, I intersect, I calc points, I look at everything. All in my TSC2 or formerly HP48, and my sketch.
Then I go stake everything I need to, and go home when I'm done. When I download it and bring it into CAD it gives me a sense of double checking things I may not ever get if I did it in CAD in my truck. Yes, it may take me a bit longer in the field, but I feel that extra sense of comfort I get with another look-see in the office is worth the time.
If its a survey I can't do in a day, I just get everything I need on day one. Then calc it all in the office, maybe go get more field data or research. Then go stake it when its time.
Just this soloist $0.02 in this high tech time of zooming around too much

A Panasonic Toughbook loaded with Carlson Field is the best data collector setup we have found to date. The ability to use the graphics in the field and get all of the symbology and line work done is awesome. Saves a ton of time and money.
Panasonic Toughbook CF-52. I use the dock at the office and an external 20" monitor, but can whip it in the truck if needed. So far, I love it. have had it for a few years now.

I really wish for a Civil 3D based Data Collection System. I can't imagine the power it provides using Getac, Toughbook, or iTronix in the field. Though its downside is the weight but there are many situations that employing CAD based data collection system provides a new level of power and efficiency by doing 100% of work right where the job is - field.

Those were my original thoughts, it puts quite a bit of power at your fingertips, although mobility could become an issue.
