Hi guys!

Wishing you all good health and more wealth in 2012!

My RTK setup is Leica GS09 GNSS (GPS+GLONASS). My base is a GS09 + Long range Pacific Crest radio kit.

I wonder if there is such thing a GPRS (GSM module) base setup. I am thinking that if radio link is workable then why not with GPRS link. I know that NTRIP is a GPRS solution but its setup is too costly. Radio transmitter is also another approach but portability is another problem.

If my Leica GS09 has two GSM modules in two GFU housings for both the base and rover then I guess communication can take place as far as telecommunication is concerned based on the ability of one mobile phone to call another mobile phone anytime.

Please pardon my very limited exposure to the GNSS world.

Thank you.

Regards.

I was recently investigating a similar setup with trimble gear.

It seems that to do that you need a cell plan and cell phones that can do circuit switched data, rather than the more common now packet switched data. In other words, the cell phones must make a call from one to the other, just as we did in the past with computer modems.

There are people doing exactly this, but with my current cell phones and carrier, not possible.

I looked into setting up an NTrip server in the office, where one unit (the base) would send the data to, and the other unit, the rover, would get the corrections from. Not impossible, but difficult.

Good luck.

The answer is yes.......The GS09 will work well GPRS using the GFU19 Verizon Multitec modem. These modems can broadcast and receive, just fine.

Multitech modem

The multitech modem(s) looks like what I would need. Their webpage has one specifically for Verizon. Also airlink appears to have similar devices (ruggedized?). Does anyone know who you need to talk to at Verizon to be able to use these? I somehow think that the folks at the local verizon store generally wouldn't have a clue.

I have Leica 1200 gear with the Leica supplied Siemens GSM / GPRS modems
in the Leica housing, YES, you can communicate directly between the base and rover via dial up, WHAT I have found though is Circuit Switched Date (CSD) is not popular among the carriers and will probably eventually cease to be supported since almost everything is packet switched data via an IP address these days.

Some days and some locations mine works, other times not. In addition I think even when supported by a network, CSD has lower priority to voice and you will get bumped off the network during busy times, at least that is my experience.

Thank you so much for sharing..

Yes, NTRIP is a more reliable solution and had been more stable since we switched to it over single baselines.
