Due to a change in jobs I will be writing a state test in the coming months and feel the need to specifically brush up on PLSS topics. I've located the following resources on-line:
Caltrans Unit 12
Washington State DNR on Resorations
Washington State DNR on Retracement
Oregon Department of Cartography on PLSS
I also have my trusty '73 manual and the '74 pamphlet, as well as pdf versions of both. I also have Al White's History of the Rectangular Survey System.
So I'm on the lookout for any other good documents that will be helpful. Anybody got any good links to PLSS educational material?
And yes, I should be doing CFEDS. But I don't have time for that before exam time.
See if you can get a look at the CFedS course materials.
Lots of good stuff!
It looks like you will be taking the WA state specific test?
If so, let me know, I am taking it as well, and if you are in the area (Bellevue) feel free to call, and we can try to have a study session.

I just completed a PLSS class this semester. I have some materials that may be of some help to you. Shoot me an email.

Did Washington in 2001. Oklahoma this time.
At the risk of mentioning the obvious (I know its not available in pdf) get the 2009 BLM Manual.
A Collection of Instructions to Surveyors of the Public Lands 1815 – 1881. collected by Roy Minnick. Rancho Cordova, California, Landmark Enterprises
Original Instructions Governing Public Land Surveys 1815 – 1855. Ed. J. S. Dodds. Ames, Iowa: J.S. Dodds, 1944
Hawes, J. H. Manual of United States Surveying. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott, 1868 (Reprint available)
Hodgman, F. A Manual of Land Surveying. Climax, Michigan: F. Hodgman, 1891 (Reprint available)
Stewart, Lowell O. Public Land Surveys: History, Instructions, Methods. Ames, Iowa: Collegiate Press, 1935 (Reprint available)
Tillotson, Ira M. Legal Principles of Property Boundary Location on the Ground in the Public Land Survey States. Missoula, Montana: Ira M. Tillotson, 1973
Just sent 15 emails containing PLSS study materials. Hope it helps. Good luck.
When I first read the post I thought it meant you were composing a test as opposed to sitting for the test.
Sounds to me like the materials already mentioned exhaust the subject as for as the scope of a state exam would be concerned.
(If you were testing in WI, I'd tell you to go down to Quality Supply and study fencing materials 'cause that's the right way to do it back there...... Tongue Totally In Cheek!)
Good luck!
Got 'em. Thanks, David!
> ... the 2009 manual...
I'll be sure to do that, but just dropping the manual on a person is like drinking from a firehose.
Restoration of Lost & Obliterated Corners by the BLM.
It can be downloaded Here: http://www.cadastral.net/lao/lao-all.htm
Or contact the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.
For water work
Riparian boundaries by Andrew Harbin.
If I think of more I will let you know.
I posted this before, but the training PowerPoint slideshows for the presentations about the 2009 Manual that BLM has been doing in conjunction with the State Professional societies are on-line, and for the most point pretty explanatory. In fact make sure to use notes view and you can see the speaker’s notes. Oklahoma’s presentation is 2004, so I would suggest looking at the Colorado one from last March. The one I did in February in Alaska is there too, but we tailored it for some of the specific new things applying only to Alaska. The link:
