I'm looking at a 1983 plat drawing that has a mixture of points labeled with circles, and no legend to explain them:

9 open circle, no label (mostly center of road or stream)

1 open circle "center of large rock"

4 open circle "Iron pin set"

2 filled circle "Iron pin set"

Would you find any significance in the open versus filled circles?

This is one of my pet peeves. Maybe number 40237. Symbols, that cannot be differentiated, from others.

Ambiguous symbols.

And, all the same symbols.

I see an Indian, with a pine branch, obfuscating the trail, instead of one leaving a trail.

If you want others to follow you.... Leave a trail!

If you have open and filled with the same words "iron pin set" next to them, there can't be significance.

Probably not.?ÿ This was a hand drawn ink on mylar drawing??ÿ If so, open circles got closed when you had poor skills, dirty tools or were just plain lazy.?ÿ If one symbol is labeled on a drawing I find no need to put it into the legend, or even have a legend.?ÿ?ÿ

1983, birth year of the internet, McNugget and GPS.?ÿ?ÿ

Bill, I was taught open for found and solid for set.?ÿ Reason being that when you set a monument you fill in the hole.?ÿ Also, they stand out more.?ÿ I will note that this was towards the end of the the hand drafting days.

As for legends, cartographic standards dictate that if symbol is individually labeled on the drawing it represents the exception not the typical.?ÿ Every map should have a comprehensive legend.?ÿ Not just a good idea but the law in Oregon.

All I can say is check to make sure it's not a multi-page plat.?ÿ The legend might be on another page.

Law

The plat shall show and identify all monuments necessary for the location of the parcel
and shall indicate whether the monuments were found or placed.

?ÿ

A few possibilities.?ÿ

Customary in Iowa to used closed for found.?ÿ

Closed looking circle is actually open -(poor copy)?ÿ

drafting mistake

text mistake

lack of normal care in QC plat checking
