Have any of you used a pinpointer such as the Garrott Carrot or the Minelab Pro-Find for searching for survey monuments? These are marketed as metal detecting / treasure hunting devices. I'd like to have something that fits in a vest pocket as a adjunct to the Schonstedt. Also, it would be handy, at times, to detect aluminum and brass.

Yes, I regularly used a Whites pinpointer. It was especially usefull for use under chainlink fences as you can set the range of detection. So, if you can get ,say 5" below the fence you can set the range to 5" or less and detect without interference from the fence. It was also handy to have in your pocket or on your belt at all times. I used it, a Schonstedt and a Bounty Hunter to recover early 1900's GLO monuments that were mostly rusted away in our local soils. Often finding only a ring of rust and the cement cores as shown in the attached photos. I highly recommend a pinpointer.

Note the two holes in the second photo. The brass cap was found in the upper hole (north) but the stub of the original monument was found in the lower hole.
