After 5 years with an old nissan navara. I've just ordered a brand new toyota Hilux 3.0D Automatic.

I've spoilt myself a bit (company pays the bill) for all of my hard work; leather interior, built-in gps, new hardtop alpha gullwing , longbed, roof rack.

Delivery end of may, can't wait

Sweet! I'm a big fan of the Hilux and very pleased to hear that Toyota is merging the US offering (Tacoma) more with the international offering.

I wish the US version had some of the international drive train offerings, especially of the diesel variant.

The Tacoma is only available through import over here. It is too large for Europeans 😉

Besides that there aren't much pickups on the road here; fuel is expensive; the trend is smaller is better.

US-pickups are only on the road for showing off over here. Often its the Dodge brand.

Does the "D" in 3.0D stand for diesel? What is the rated fuel mileage and power ratings?

Here in the US , Big Rigs of the 1970's have given diesel such a bad name, that we are slow to adopt the new diesel technology.

Not too many people know that you can get more power per gallon of fuel with the same emissions as a gasoline engine.

I can't imagine surveying in anything smaller than a Suburban, and that is smaller than a Tacoma?

We just got the Toyota Tundra, and I like it a lot.

I spent years surveying out of a Nissan PU. No problems with holding enough gear.

Tacoma is Toyota's small truck

Tundra is their full size model

What is the bumper under the rear bumper?

That is part of the towing package, a receiver hitch and stabilizer bar. Some can be made to double as an air tank.

Towing receivers usually are limited to the width of the truck frame. It must be the stabilizer that causes it to extend the full width of the bumper?

I'm having a hard time figuring out how the stabilizer would work. I'm familiar with weight distribution bars, where the stabilizer goes from the trailer tongue to the small ball on the hitch.

Correct : D is diesel. Motor gives 171hp and uses around 8~11 liters/100km i.e 29~21 miles/gallon.

A lot of people drive diesel over here (even porsches!). Diesel engines are more efficient and durable than petrol engines. The difference in cost is the main reason that diesel drivers outnumber the petrol ones although the difference in price is getting smaller. 1,25€/l (diesel) vs. 1,40€/l.

in $ approx. 5$/gallon for diesel over here compared with 2,5$/gallon in the US you'll understand that "smaller is better"

Most surveyors use their normal estate cars, a few of them use vans or cars like these

Pickup-trucks are not often used by surveyors.

It's all about sorting and storing your gear correctly.

Hi Christof,

A bit of luxury after several downtimes with my old nissan is acceptable.

4x4 was a must and the advantage of no BIV-cost makes the decision easier to make!

I mainly work right from the line Brussels-Antwerp till Dutch and German border, not in Ghent area allthough sometimes for a contractor who does parking areas.
