Hi guys!
If you were to buy a total station today, what will you prefer between a plain robotic and an imaging robotic total station? What are the real advantages of an imaging robotic total station over the other? How about durability? How about support? Is the price difference worth it?
Have a nice weekend to all surveyors around the world.
A pleasant afternoon from the Philippines. 🙂
To Lieca guys.. 🙂
Is the advantage of TS15i over TS15P in its partical sense really worth the money?
Thank you.

hello amdomag,
we don't use the leica imaging stations but i have used them on loan while the 1200 was in for service.
i found the panoramic image taking to be slow and the need to take photos of scenes (from the total station) was non existent (i didn't take one the whole time!).
however, the camera on the controller is quite useful, and this comes on all viva units IIRC. as most of your robotic work will be at the pole end of things with the controller, the most useful camera is the one in the controller. we take photos of many of the points we locate, and we sketch notes on the images often enough to appreciate it. it is great for having a visual record of cut/fill values marked on stakes, and benchmark level values we pen in for others to use. we also take photos of manholes and sketch in pipe directions, depths and diameters.
in summary, we couldn't justify the price premium for imaging at the total station, but its great in the controller.
A very informative response here, from JerryS, second post in this thread:

Referring to the Topcon IS-3 but probably relevant to all brands of imaging TS's and software.
The TS15i is a great gun, it far exceeds the imaging specs of any others on the market. Problem is, what can you REALLY use the image for? Yes, you can use an image, but the image from a data collector is normally good enough for what you are looking for. I am all about making the most money off your equipment, I just don't see any extra money to be made there.
If you are really interested in "mixing" up what your instrument can be used for look at the new MS50. Scanning is a great tool.
