My brother and I were looking through a bunch of old papers tied together with old shoe strings that had been passed down from my uncle when he passed as few years ago.
Could not believe what was in that chunk of papers.
My great-grandfather's discharge from the Union Army during the Civil War, old deeds to property in Missouri that he owned, old letters from my great-greatgrandfather to relatives written before the Civil War, and a letter from my great-great uncle also in the Union Army, written at the encampment at Vicksburg in 1863.
Can one of you PLSS guys in Missiouri help me with the location of the land in the deed. It's 80 acres described as the West 1/2 of NM Quartersection 35 of Township 42, Range 14, Miller Co. Mo. I would like to Google it and see where my great-grandfather lived before he traveled to Texas in 1886.
I'm a Texas surveyor and have never dealt with the PLSS.
Thanks
John Harmon
Well, your ancestor was on the wrong side (Yamn Dankee), but at least you know how to survey. Metes & Bounds forever!

The first link will give you an idea of where you are looking. The second link is great if you will enter: Missouri, 42n, 14w, 35 Then hit view on google earth. The third link has various options as well.
The location is about two miles west of the big city of Eugene, Missouri.
Looks like the original patent, which you can view, went to a Joel Bond.

Odd that the patent dates to 1857. Missouri had been surveyed for 30 years by that time. Perhaps a less than desireable tract compared to others.

Here is a link to the Miller County researchers for various family names. I see Harmon on the list. Is that the family name that was is Miller County? What were the names of your ancestors who lived there and during what timeframe?
Joel Bond was my great-grandmother's brother-in-law and his name appears in old letters and as a witness in an affidavit within the stack of old papers. My great-grandmother inherited the land from her father.
When I would like to post some of the old stuff. The writings in those days was so formal and precise, not like the button pushing of today.

Great-grandfathers last name was McMillin. His wife, my great-grandmother's last name was McKinney. Bunch of Scotsman in that area. Originally from Kentucky.
John Stanley McMillin (Civil War vet)died about 14 years before I was born. My Mom talked about him when I was a kid.

From the second link it appears the McKinney's moved from Kentucky to Missouri sometime between 1836 and 1839 based on birth places of children listed.
