OK, so I get in this survey, that fronts on a lake. The client has several surveys by another surveyor.

The 2 surveys that exist are:

1.) on the lake front.

2.) 1/4 mile back from the lake, but shows description all the way to the lake front survey.

So, I tie in all the monuments I can find. (He wants to break it up into several parcels).

I find a 20-30' bust between the front and back. (Depending on which monuments you look at)

I call the other surveyor, and he tells me that he did it in 2 parts, and that they were never tied together. They were ASSUMED together. (This was not plain at first, but became plain, after assembling the WHOLE conversation)

His exact words were "Numbers, just numbers, that's what those are, and your numbers are different than mine".

I'm saving that little gem.

He's an older retired guy, but, that is like the Lucy and Charlie brown, where he TRUSTS her one more time, and she jerks the ball away.

I don't trust alot of stuff. But, this is a classic. Surveying is an exercise in Compromise.

RTK is accurate, to within a tenth, typically, Tape and theodolite, is accurate, to within 0.03' (Or whatever you estimate the coffee level of the crew is!)

And NOTHING is exact. + - 0.01' + - 0.0025' all measurements contain error. Tolerances.

And, it's all numbers. Just numbers. And yours are different than mine!

Ain't it grand?

How do we do it?

Liars. Make better money. Bigger lies, more money.

I'm not mad. (anymore) just kind of blown away by the explanation!

OK, go back to discussing your favorite sandwich. Thanks for listening!

🙂

PS I am thinking more seriously about putting together an ethics course, from the Bible.

Would you be interested if I did it?

Thanks,

Nate

Mr Bionic, what seminary did you attend, if I may ask?

"To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." Isaiah 8:20

I attended 2 small non-denominational Seminaries in St. Louis.
The process of understanding and communicating concepts from ancient documents isn't very different than evaluating records during a survey. There are countless parallels. .
