It has been brought to my attention that Arkansas, California, Colorado and West Virginia appear to be the only States left that have not voted to join NSPS. Texas and Iowa look like they are in the process of joining (membership has approved).

So here are my questions.

1. For the States that have joined, how much did your dues go up?
2. How much are your yearly dues including NSPS membership?
3. Did your State association lose any members over the cost increase? If so, do you know an estimated percentage?
4. Do you feel the extra money spent each year is worth the value of NSPS membership?
5. If you are located in California, Colorado or West Virginia, has your State association made any plans for the membership to vote on this? If not, what were the reasons?

Please list which State you are a resident in if you choose to respond.

1. $20 (the society picked up half of the NSPS dues)
2. $205 for a regular (licensed) member; $70 for associate members
3. Not that I know of
4. It's only $20 bucks, I just spent half that on takeout Thai for lunch

Tennessee
1. $215
2. $40
3. No, our membership has actually increased.
4. Absolutely
5. N/A

There is a lot going on on the national front, and there are good things coming in the future. There is strength in numbers, and this helps the numbers.

Oklahoma just voted to join a month ago at our State convention.

Dues will double from 50 to 100 with 40 for NSPS and another 10 for the state association. State part should have been a bigger raise. First one in over 10 years, maybe close to 20 years.

I am located in WV. I have been a member of WVSPS since I moved back here about 5 years ago. I am the president of our local chapter and we have been pushing for our state society to join NSPS. Some of the higher ups seem to think that it isn't a good idea. Our chapter has sent letters to the society and our chapter rep brings it up regularly at the quarterly state meetings. Last I heard, the "official" response was that they were looking into it further. I am very disappointed that it hasn't happened yet and I have so far withheld paying my dues this year after sending a letter to that effect to the society. I live near the WV/KY border and I am considering joining KAPS instead until the "leaders" in the WVSPS pull their heads out of their...

My opinion (only); they should put it to a vote of the membership. Follow the guidelines of the official voting procedure and put it to a vote. Go with the results of the majority of the members. They are organization. Maybe it's not that simple of a vote because there are questions that are not yes or no. But if you even got a consensus in principle you could work from there. (Ie I don't know about the "sliding scale" or the total membership, or how much dues would change...etc.)

Of course I sure don't have all the answers. I leave it up to those that enjoy the politics.

That's all we've asked, put it to a vote. It hasn't happened.

1. $40.00
2. $300 (PS) + $40 (NSPS) + $27 (Local Chapter) = $367
3. I think it would have lost a few, BUT Continuing Education became law this year. This should cause the membership to be almost %100 of all PS in the state.
4. Yes, $40 is a good deal.

Iowa

1. $40

2. $140

3. We won't know until after our next renewal cycle next year. Anecdotal evidence indicates some states have experienced an increase in membership since adopting the 100% proposal.

4. I've been spending $225 each year and thought it was worth it, so I guess the answer would be yes.

Read through all of the bylaws of the corporation. Do they require an annual (or regular) full membership meeting? Can a member request a vote at that meeting? Is there a way or vehicle for a member or group of members to make a motion for a vote? Is there any way you or your chapter can bring the subject to the forefront? I would think there is a written method to bring this forward.

Sounds like a good reason to go all Hatfield and McCoy on the leaders up there. 😉

:good:

Run for state office. Run for director or even president elect. I would vote for you and I'm sure others would as well.
Make a change.

The California Land Surveyors Association is currently negotiating an MOU with NSPS that will be presented to the CLSA Directors for review.

The next Board meeting is April 26th, I don't see it on the pre agenda, but that does not mean it will not come up again for discussion. There has been extensive discussion, a webinar has been created, and it gets some folks fired up at the local Chapter meetings.

CLSA dues are currently $159 for Corporate members (Licensed Surveyors)and we have talked about increasing dues $40 for the NSPS dues, if approved.

There seems to be some pockets of resistance. I can not speak for all California Surveyors, but opposition to the Model Law comes up. I have witnessed more than one member saying they will resign from CLSA if we do this. My sense is that it will eventually happen.
