Wtf!
This could be on the "There, I fixed it" blog.
Just for what it is worth, SCREWS don't do well in earthquakes. Nails do better. They flex a bit and give a little.
Those might be little give places, for earthquake relief.
I found out that tolerances for aircraft piston engines are real sloppy. They want those engines to use a little oil, and not to have critical contact points.
Earthquake country.

Why did they proceed to weld it on when they could clearly see that they were landing totally eccentric to the base?
Apparently they didn't understand cogo in the former Soviet Union. This is button pushing at its best.
I'm going to share this on another forum.

Looks like they've only tack-welded that monstrosity, waiting on that "*cough* approval"

You're right RJ, my point is, why bother? They need to get out the torch and start modifying the cross beam. Because it looks like the caissons have been driven into resistance and filled, and they're not going anywhere.

This pictures makes more sense to me.....
Wow, Seriously? Whoever is running that job needs to say STOP!!! They will have to torch it at some time anyway.....
"You're right RJ, my point is, why bother?"
No idea, must be just some make-do work. Who knows what that approval process is like.

I think the oldtimer is disgruntled because he has been superseceded by the new tachymeters and wants to get even. So he had the crew rig it up and tack it just so he could make this video and really stick it to management. Who knows he might have even sabotaged the Total Station Crew:-)
Zelenak and Barton need to visit Russia
Obviously, they must not be doing their work correctly because they don't turn out anything like what is in that video.
Zelenak and Barton need to visit Russia
Note to self- do not ride Russian rollercoasters.
Russian Surveyors
I was sitting in a sidewalk cafe having a beer one afternoon in St. Petersburg (Leningrad) a few years back, when a 2-man leveling crew came by. A couple of kids (25ish) with a Topcon optical Level and a one-piece Invar rod (2-meter wood). They came bopping down the street, over a canal bridge (St. Petersburg was once known as the Venice of the North), and on up a side street. They were keeping their notes in a field book, appeared to be balancing their turns, and selecting reasonable TPs on curbs and such. Reminded me of my early days doing much the same thing in Utah (except Utah doesn't have canals like that).
