I am trying to extend the life of my old GPT 8005 Robot. I am concerned about my using the remote to point the instrument at my glass. It doesnt work and I am not sure what could be wrong? Maybe the handle? This gun really hasnt been used as much as most robots. The RC-2RII does power on and shows the icon to be sending out. I cant remember if it is supposed to have a visible red beam or not. Anybody ever have this problem?
It maybe your cable. If you watch the lights on the top you should see the lights going out and when your robot responds you will see the lights flash when it comes back.
When my cables go bad it send it out and it doesn't come back.

I will have to check them out.
Thanks for the reply. Sure hope this is it.
There is no visible red beam. I believe it is all infrared. Do you need it to communicate measurement data to the data collector or just operate as a dog whistle (with communication through radio or bluetooth module) or both data and dog whistle?
Try the following-
1. Remove total station handle and reattach;
2. Make sure robot is set to communicate using rc-2 (if that is what you want it to do);
3. Check dip switches in battery compartment are set properly. The fact that it is just sending out data suggests it may be just set to dog whistle (see manual for settings);
4. New cable as suggested above.
I would suggest that if you try the above mentioned items and it doesn't work, then open up the case of the RC remote and ensure that the infrared is aiming forward and not pointed in the wrong direction. If it is then reattach/screw and add a little super-glue to help hold it.

You could also try getting some semi-liquid conductive material on the handle, sometimes a little dimple forms after years of use.
No-ox-id is one brand.
