Does new technology increase the number of jobs in the
marketplace, or decrease or result in a small net gain or loss?

See the thread below--
New technology has aloud research to be done quicker, field work that required a 2 or 3 person crew can now be done in 1/2 the time by a one person field crew and plats that required 40 hours of Leroying can be done in 8 hrs.
New technology has eliminated the number of jobs in the market place.
Our industry is seeing a phenomenon in which those who have lost their jobs have either moved on, retired or opened their own firm.
There are more land surveying companies operating today than there were ten years ogo. The primary cause is that technology replaced their previous employ, thus casing them to go it alone. There is an oversupply of land surveyors trying to compete in a market place in which there is very little demand. The net result is basic supply and demand and the prices that we once charged has suffered severely. These new firms have really nothing else to offer the public, other than low prices. Our profession is at the brink of collapse.
I agree with 6th, I'm pretty much a one-man show now ... just 15 years ago I would have needed to run 1 crew, minimum ...
-Secratary to take the work orders while I'm in the field - replaced with cell-phone
-2 person crew minimum (me and a rodman) - replaced with GPS and Robots
-Probably a draftsman, since I'd not enough time in the day to survey and draft "old fashion" style - replaced with CAD, autoline work, better data flow, etc.
So we basically have one guy doing the work of 4 ... (for about the same relative compensation a PSM would have made 15 years ago) ...

Come on, I expected better than "aloud" for allowed. I just guess you're kidding and was just checking to see if anyone would notice!
But otherwise I'm in agreement about technology reducing jobs. It's been that way since the industrial revolution.

😉 So much for modern technology & auto spell checkers
I don't think there is any serious question that new technology increases productivity which will reduce jobs in a stagnant or shrinking economy.
A few people will, of course, benefit from the technology in that they will use it to receive the income 2 or 3 people used to split among themselves. The example of the solo surveyor is obvious; 40 years ago a minimum firm would be one 3 person crew, a couple of draftsman, a secretary and an owner/LS. Now all that can be done by one person with perhaps the same total revenue.
I'm glad for this great technology... I started off dragging a chain... hanging plumb bobs under the gun... even Now when I actually have to pull a gun out out I groan about even though its prismless with laser plumb...
...but yeah ..less people on a crew...but for an antisocial introverted misfit as myself its perfect to be solo'ing it...
Reminded me of a chat with this rancher I was doing a survey for a few years ago.. he was a specialist in TV and radio tubes ... then the resistor came along and he was suddenly obsolete almost overnight ...
Where'd all the travel agents go?
Realtors will go by the wayside too, kicking and screaming all the way.
Adapt to change. People hate to change.
