Mounds, Pits & Trenches

This survey happens to be at Ocotillo Wells.

It seems that if I am in a helicopter, I'll get a different perspective than if on the ground. This does not replace a ground survey.

I mostly want to recon each site to see if we can see anything at all. If so, we'll mark the location and return to do a detailed search, set a monument, and position it. We plan to visit each location in any event.

We'll be looking for monuments set per the 1855 Instructions in 1855 & 1856: they set mostly a mound with charred stake, trenches, and pits.

The pits I've found look remarkably like depressions that animals make. It's the stone in the middle of the pits that gives them away. I think out of a helicopter you will be finding all kinds of "pits".

After seeing enough pits you will get a feel for the difference, but, it takes close inspection.

That's what I was thinking. Very much like a depression in the grass where a deer had spent the night.

If they are there, they should show up....after find the first one, we'll have trouble not seeing them!

Again, if we are looking in the right place, and they were set in the first place.

Lots of fun times coming!!

I agree that the air would give you a different perspective, and commend you on thinking outside the box. Jp
