These photos are of an MWD Triangulation Station (actually on the back tangent)for the Colorado River Aqueduct.
Since they would be frequently be occupying these points, they made metal pipe stands to mount the transit over the point. When you've hiked uf this big a$$ hill to get there with a GPS unit and tripod that will not extend enough to clear the pipe stand, you do what you need to do! I was not hiking down that hill to get a layout rod, and then hike back up......again.
You can see the spoil pile over the top of the GPS unit, and just to the right of that , you can see the adit for the tunnel.
Sure looks like great GPS country. It seems odd to see a Metropolitan WATER District monument in the middle of the desert.
