Here's where you should start. I'm sure there is an RTK correction stream you could use. Some are free here in US.

The base should be as open as possible. Base and rover need common satellites so if the rover is marginal it may work if the base has a lot more satellites available.

U.S. boundary law is like U.K. boundary law with an inadequate scientific element thrown in to make it interesting. Much of the U.S. is arid and larger tracts so it doesn't lend itself as well to walls and hedges.

Prescriptive rights don't exist in the UK.?ÿ Buying land in the UK is totally different than the US.

As Squowse has already said there is no free network correction stream in the UK. Access to those provided by Trimble, Leica, etc., is a subscription service at around, I think, ?œ200 a month.

What makes you so sure??ÿ ?

I think we have established that the OP doesn't really need a GPS, he needs a total station. But in any case gumtree and craigslist here are full of scams. So that kit might not actually be for sale and certainly hope no one would send them money, or to "parcelforce" which is what i suspect would be requested.

?ÿ

No free NRTK in UK as yet.?ÿ

No measured "cadastre" either. Certainly not with coordinates.?ÿ

?ÿ

Free NTRIP in the UK:

http://www.gref-ip.de/home

http://mgex.igs-ip.net/

Or, if you want to import the mountpoint table into something like the Lefebure app:

http://78.46.59.40:2101/

Even if those "free" UK based NTRIP mountpoints give you grief, it's really not necessary to use them. I live in Augsburg, Germany. The mountpoints closest to me (southern Germany) crash my Leica GPS500 systems. There's something in the data stream that crashes them immediately- even with a paid account. But if I use the mountpoint in Barcelona (1040kms away) at the right time of day (that's critical) I can easily get a 20mm fix using a 100% free NTRIP account. For what I do, that's plenty. I even got a 40mm fix from Ankara, Turkey (1976kms away) once. But that took some time, and I wouldn't recommend pursuing it.

There are mountpoints in the Netherlands and one in Derry (Northern Ireland) that would give the OP a good enough fix even with old equipment like mine. I think there might be one in Brussels too. But clearly the OP is better off with a reflectorless total station. No question.

And I've used Parcel Force many times. They are the shipping branch of Royal Mail. I've never had a problem with them. But yes, I've been asked to hand over my cash to scammers who use Parcel Force.

Mick.

Just had a quick look. There are free NTRIP mountpoints located at Derry and Enniskillen in Northern Ireland, Inverness in Scotland, and Hailsham, Daresbury and Shoeburyness in Ingalund. I don't know if the streams are compatible with your system, but they are free.

How are these accessed? They might be of some use to someone local.

I could only see ones in Germany/Nethrlands on the link you sent.

Yes, I suppose they are free, if your customers are happy with corrections based on a reference hundreds or thousands of miles away.

Very sorry for the delay gentleman, Christmas and the usual rush with work occurred...me wondering if I should do most of it, for fear of clients 'forgetting' to pay before Christmas! Many that did pay before the festive season were amused by me saying, "I can have food during the winter now".

Arti Kay - I definitely have thought about renting and even did once for a bigger job. Trouble is that it would cost around ?œ1000+VAT to hire it for the week (minimum term), many jobs I do would take no more than half a day, so I can't get the client to pay. I do like your thinking though, I have been warned about the potential costs involved, something that very much puts me off a GPS system and tends towards a Robotic Total Station.

Chris Mills - Many thanks for your message by the way. You're quite right, surveys rarely tie into title deeds, even when there's a several hundred year old stone wall. Thanks for your comments Chris, much appreciated. Thanks for your later comment about the subscription service cost, thank you.

Micheal D'Aubyn - Very kind of you to comment, especially in relation to costs and my cursory research. Kent indeed, assumption correct! That's very useful to know about NTRIP, many many thanks for that. You are correct with your third point (people seem to do that on this forum, quite a lot), it's normally dense housing areas though occasionally I do properties that include around 6 acres of 'garden'. It's those that I could capilatise on and provide not only floor plans / elevations, but also entire topo drawings. It would be really nice to do the whole job, not just because of the extra income, but just to help clients with just one contact.

I suppose I do detailed surveys though, as I have to in order to provide realistic proposals for people when it comes to intended construction. I could easily work with the surveying info I get using my basic equipment, but quite often once I'm appointed, I'm asked to do more - this ends up being a greater surveying area that my equipment can't deal with accurately.

I'm definitely going to look into NTRIP enabled Rovers, many thanks for the tip, very much appreciated.

Interesting point about Germany, I'll remember that!

Thank you again everyone.

Also, I was doing a measured survey a few weeks ago and sub contracted a Survey company, they used this gear. I've already received the topo drawing, received within a few days, very impressed.?ÿ

The precision carrier to stack the glass on is a good sign. You've found somebody who cares enough about their work to invest in the best tools.?ÿ

Thanks for that Mark, yes they do seem pretty professional, although now I'm drawing up, there are a few items missing from the drawing, which is a shame.

Missing stuff,?ÿ depending on what it is,?ÿ is better than having stuff that is wrong and thinking it is right.

Very true, only minor details of an outbuilding not on the site, but I was asked to produce a street scene including it. I've emailed them but I suspect they're not open today. I can still get the rest done though, so no time wasted so far!

Only a little update, but that company came back with the extra level info I needed - they had previously surveyed the adjacent property (lucky!).
