Wow.?ÿ

Specific instructions, arrival times, and even the anticipated hours, all fine.?ÿ But all that other crap is pretty offensive.?ÿ

I don't know your relationship with this manager, but unless you guys typically joke around and give each other sarcastic jabs, this is pretty annoying stuff.

Did he give you a specific time to take a sh#t??ÿ

@bstrand I know a guy who was working for a large engineering firm and had been for over 20 years. He ad another engineer tart the beach office. He's a PE and s LS. He's licensed in three states a cool and was?ÿ supervising all of the land surveying in those three offices. Plus he was the Design Engineer on over $800,000 of ongoing projects. The Office Director and the HR DIrector showed up and dismissed him for poor performance. He wasn't billing clients to the Director's satisfaction. He's now enjoying the summer waiting for his 22 months of severance pay check considering going to Law School.

An incompetent boss can lead to riches if your lucky.

@kevin-hines I'd keep that email with all then sender's information refrain from responding with any replies that could be construed as insubordination, review your position description, and your employee handbook. And look for a better firm to work for.

I'm guessing that means he wasn't paying for all of the office bloat sitting in cubes 3 states away. ????ÿ

@jitterboogie?ÿ

I didn't read it as condescending, but re-reading I see it. Likely if I knew the person who wrote the message I'd interpret as you did.

I'm particularly intolerant of condensing remarks. "Yeah, I'm not doing that" is a potential reply. Or more likely, "yeah, F-you."

@jitterboogie?ÿ

When youƒ??re a construction surveyor time is always of the essence. ?ÿThere are a lot of people depending on your work before they can do theirs.

Please and thanks goes a long way.

For a construction staking crew that is mentoring at some outfits ?ÿLol

@fairbanksls?ÿ

I get it. I'm all about the team, and on a construction site the team is multi faceted. We need them, they need us, we all need to work together like ants, and get it done.

@jph?ÿ

Had he, I would have filed a formal complaint with the potty police.

?ÿ

Hopefully it all works out.?ÿ He can't be successful and our company can't be successful without respecting each other and working as a team, embracing the difference of opinion and also recognizing the talent and strength of each of us for what we add to the process.

Not condemning and condescending and trying to control.

Kumbaya...

after we reviewed and discussed this email, we both went to this guy's boss and asked for a meeting.

I'm reading this as you and "D" read and discussed between yourselves the email.

Did you have a discussion with the email originator??ÿ This seems like a problem that could have been initially addressed by saying "Hey, I appreciate that you've had issues with recent crews, but D and I conduct ourselves professionally.?ÿ Please be as detailed as you want in providing instructions for the job as we're looking to learn and grow professionally, but I found the tone of the email condescending - which I do not appreciate."

@brad-ott?ÿ

Amen.

Emergency is for life threatening things and such.

The idea that a dam or building could collapse and kill people yes, but it never the forms need to be set because the pour is happening at 0100 now because someone changed their mind.....

Nope.?ÿ Not an emergency but definitely an interesting and stressful and can still be done respectfully.

@jon-payne?ÿ

If we'd have a chance to discuss the way you're doing so, in your detached and unconnected position, the previous history of where we've been, and our collective experience with other companies and situations, we just had no use for engagement with the direct problem, because the condescension was already being imposed, so we just put a direct end to it and found support from the person whom had the best insight to things we didnt have knowledge about anyway.

Sometimes you don't have a good reason to work with the perpetrator, because you don't have anyone else to support you. Those situations really suck.

@tim-v-pls?ÿ

My initial gut response was...

"Oh yeah, or what?"

I appreciate people that are in leadership roles, esp when they can hit the field and get it done.

Doesn't free you up to be a schmuck, and treat people poorly, and compare them to what your own personal performance and abilities are.

It's not a competition. It's a collaboration and a team effort.

We all have something to add.

I can appreciate the idea that you didn't feel like you could address that person about the matter, not agree with, but appreciate.?ÿ But, just as your blaming this persons past experience with sub-par crews as the reason for his condescension, you seem to be using your past experiences at other companies as a reason not to address the matter with him first - despite understanding that your part of a team.?ÿ How do you think team moral is going to be between the email originator and you now that you didn't even discuss the matter with him first?

Very shortly before I was licensed, I worked for a really good company.?ÿ However, it was not without issues.?ÿ The company was owned by two people a PE and a PLS.?ÿ One instance, the PE was chewing me out about how I had located a curb.?ÿ I did it the way I had been doing it when I summer interned at another company and no one had provided any different guidance when I went to work for them.?ÿ He made a statement that really pissed me off, like blood pressure rising pissed off.?ÿ It was the end of the day, so I started to head home and was stewing about it.?ÿ Ended up turning around and went back into the office.?ÿ We discussed the comment.?ÿ I can tell you, as a young 20-something guy it was VERY tough to keep a reasonably calm demeanor because I was pretty angry.?ÿ He apologized for the the comment.?ÿ I continued to work there and with him for a good while longer.?ÿ I doubt we (the PE and I) would have had the same interactions if I had gone to the other owner (PLS) about the matter instead.
