This is the Gimli Glider Story. A nice airplane, that had a near fatal incident, due to metrication.

I know little about flying, but I'm a little surprised that the pilots couldn't tell the total take off weight of the plane was at least 7% lighter than it ought to have been. I suppose with something that weighs nearly 400,000 lbs it's hard to have much feel for that weight difference. Had the fuel gauge been working, they would have known.
