As a rule I generally stay away from residential lots, but there's always an exception.

The HMFIC of the "land use" department at one of my client's called today. He and his wife have watched too much cable tv and decided to try to "flip" a house.

He needed a survey, quick.

Did I mention he's in charge of handing out all the work I do for them? Oh, well....

Nice place in a nice 'hood. We started kicking up the pins when I saw the neighborhood "watchdog" out of the corner of my eye. His ballcap indicated he was USN, retired and had been on the USS Batshit. As respectful as I am toward our military, I still have things to do.

The Admiral first asked if I had a permit. When I asked him "for what?", he stomped his cane in the hole in the grass I had just popped open and said "excavation..". OK. Ol' Paden can play....

"Not required if excavation is less than 24 deep." I said as I stared him down.

Then he started on where my truck was parked, and something about 24 hour notice to all the neighbors before we started work...I really was trying to be nice, but it didn't take long for me to realize this ol' fella is just plain stuck on rules. And I don't think he had 'all his dogs barking' if you know what I mean. He was indeed a little addled. Poor guy.

Then his daughter came out of the house next door to fetch him. "Daddy, leave those men alone!"

She apologized for him. That really wasn't necessary and I told her so. She grabbed his elbow and they toddled off...for a tall cold can of Ensure and a nap, I'd bet.

As we packed up I phoned my client friend and told him we were through. He asked if the old man next door had given us any trouble. Tweren't no trouble t'all, I told him.

And as I hung up I remembered why I don't do lot surveys...

You just THOUGHT you were working for the HMFIC. Sounds as though the Admiral outranks him in that neighborhood.
