Does anyone use one of these hounddogs?
http://www.chrisnik.com/hounddog_locator_1.html
I am presently using a CST, but I am thinking of upgrading. If it actually works up against a metal fence it would be a huge help. Just looking for feedback for those that have used one.
Dan, I have used Schonestedt for years. What this does, is it makes you "Compare all you use, against what you have".
The guy selling these, is a GREAT fellow. He sent me one. I used it for about a week.
I liked it's form factor. I liked it's weight. I genuinely liked it.
BUT
It was too slow. Your sweep rate HAD to be slow. NO GOOD for traffic. It simply was like molasses in November. It was FINE, so long as you moved SLOW.
After discussing the issue, with others, I met a surveyor, who FOUND a steel monument, in a road, AFTER another surveyor had searched with a Hound Dawg.
Great metal detector, if you can stand SLOW RESPONSE TIME. Sweep FAST, and you never get a clue, that you went over a serious signal.
Being trained with a faster unit, I'd MISS stuff if I kept it. Imagine, typing, where there was a 1 second delay, AFTER pressing each letter, on the keyboard.
I'd be in trouble with it.
But, I liked it, except for that one flaw. IF they fix that issue, I'd be interested.

Dan, I bought a hound dog last year. I'd been seeing the advertisements for years and always wanted one, so I sprung for it. Now it collects dust and the schondstet that was replaced by the hound dog is what I use. The fence technology works, but it is not as good when you're away from fences. I've missed points with the hound dog and came back with the ancient schondstet and found them. Just my dime, but I'm now a loyal schondstet only guy.
How about some of these...? Fisher generally makes good products.

Schonsted, no substitutes please...
I've used CST, Subsurface & Schonstedt and have been pleased with all of them, but I don't think I would carry the Hound Dog as my everyday locator. I agree with Nate, it is too slow.
I carry a hound dog. it is slow and quiet, but the weight and ease of carry is nice. youit's use caution not to ignore a negative polet sound because it's negative. I've found plenty of rebar upright where it's poles are reversed.
I have used the "Subsurface" locators for about 3 years. Their new POLE models are absolutely fantastic. Although Schonestedt makes a really good unit, I think the Subsurface units are better now.
Got a recent email from the hound dawg folks. Bob Zankert They have UPPED the processor speed.
I have not seen it yet.

You just can't have that happen.
I use an ancient Schonstedt and I love it. It's got the variable sensitivity knob, not the position switch.
Much better around fences.
I'm as stubborn as most surveyors, but if I actually found something that worked better than my old Schonstedt, I'd use it for sure. I've tried all the others, including the Hound-dog, and they just don't cut it.

Do you have the long one, (55") or short one (40")
Thanks

Im new to posting on forums so please bear with me. I am in the market for a locator. Anybody have in input about the faster speed of the new processor of the hound dog? I like the fence technology idea. I just got a maggie but I have not gotten a chance to use it yet. I like the feature of showing the polarity of the signal, however, I like the idea of being able to block the South signal like the hound dog supposedly does. Do sub surface locators have an option like the hound dog has? Thanks
I cannot comment on the hound dog, because it has changed, since I tried it.
HOWEVER,
The Subsurface ones according to Arkansas Hwy Dpt, review, were their pic of the litter.
Several others like the subsurface POLE types.
I'd like to compare them.
And, according to a coleague who bought the MAGGIE, they say it handles the negative polarity way better than the old ones.
I don't know. But, I would like to know.

Me too, I have an older one and it works very well EXCEPT for having to slow the sweep speed down, it is a very small board inside, if the improvements are all in the board itself, it seems like it might be very easy to upgrade?

I must have signed up for this website a long time ago and forgot about it. I wish I would have remembered it sooner, it is a great tool!

Bob Zankert is the guy who would know.
I could dig up an email, if you need me to.

I'm in the field now.
