We've used the Mx-2 to high rail map about 150 miles of tracks for our local short line in StL. Pretty cool...

He is right that this relates to ptc. We used to do it with special high rail vehicles. John Chance surveying does that and liar by helicopter for several railroads.

What does lidar mapping have to do with positive train control?

Basically, the railroad had the tracks flown with GPS on copter and multiple base stations. They digitize assets and those assets are in a computer system. Files of the route are uploaded to a computer onboard the trains. Computer calcs speed to points and if certain actions are not done by X feet away (say horn not blown so many seconds from a crossing or a train does not slow coming into a signal), brakes automatically activate.
