It depends, AKsurveygirl.

IS the company in NEED of a licensed person to fill a void, or did you pursue the license on your own?

They may be comfortable keeping their current arrangement on who's stamping. As mentioned above, what VALUE do you bring to the company? If you're stamping because you now have the license, it may be increasing YOUR exposure but is adding very little to the company. Can you increase their bottom line?

> I have had past students finally get their license and receive ZERO recognition or raise from their employers. They all quit and went elsewhere for more pay.

What your students are experiencing is known as "anchoring". First impressions are long lasting. Once a person gets to know another as an intern (or technician, etc.) it is very difficult for them to think of them as anything else, no matter how much that person grows.

> ... I am wondering what should be expected as far as a base dollar figure for what a new licensed surveyor should make per hour....

First, you should expect to be switched from hourly to salary, which may mean a pay cut if you are not very clever. You need to really talk about expectations going forward, top to bottom, and not just pay to avoid future disappointment.

I don't know how things are in your area, but around here it's a buyers market for PLS services.

When I got my first License, 26 years ago, last Saturday, I got a $1.00 per hour raise, and was put on salery. Shortly after that, the BIG project we were working on mushroomed, and we started working 80+ hour weeks. I stayed there for a few years then moved on. After I left the company went out of business. In my time there, I signed 41 surveys. Fortunately there were no problems with them, becasue I do not have access to the notes and other records. If you are going to sign plats, insist on E & O Insurance, and insist that they continue to cover you after you leave.

Mark,

You are right about that. In my 40 year run I had to move on to move up. I think I will finish up here.
