I am working with some level data, and when I import it into my Spectra Precision Survey Office, it asks me for BF, BBFF, BFFB, or BFBF.
BF = Backsight Foresight
BBFF = Backsight Backsight Foresight Foresight
BFFB = Backsight Foresight Foresight Backsight
BFBF = Backsight Foresight Backsight Foresight
Does anyone know of a graphic that would describe or illustrate the differences between these methods? I'm looking through my books here at the office, without luck so far. Most of my books are at home.
Thanks,
Jimmy

Thanks Jim. I don't thin my manual has this illustration in it. We purchased our level last year. It is the DiNi 0.7mm model I believe.

Personally, I'm happiest with BF, so that's what I stick with.

We stick with BF- that other stuff is a good way to end up doing it twice.
If you want the redundancy, turn thru the points on the return loop.
KISS.

You will love that Trimble Level! I had one for a few weeks, but switched it out for a new Leica LS10. Only reason was the export format for ArDOT SDMS software - long story. But those fancy bar code levels are the cat's meow. Just don't let the young guys use it?ÿ ??ÿ

Thanks guys. My thinking is the BF is take a reading on the backsight, then read the foresight, then move forward and read the former foresight as the backsight, and so on. I agree, keep it simple.
We really like the Trimble level. They guys have it down pretty good. The biggest thing I am seeing is once in a while they will hit a wrong button, and end the line prematurely, and I'll have to edit the files to combine them. I struggled today to get three files combined on a very, very long run, and also had to weed out a portion that was busted.
My understanding is that when you swim deeper than BF the assumption is that you are concerned with temperature changes and are using two rods. I did read that when running two rods everyone moves up together instead of leapfrogging which I thought was interesting, having never done it that way myself it seems like it has the potential to be fast.
Yea, I've seen those other types before, and I want to say we briefly talked about them at the NGS Leveling class I attended in November, but if we did, it was very brief.
I am interested in the other methods just for general knowledge. I sure don't want to mess up the good job my crews are doing.
