I recently picked up a decent looking foresters compass. I found the patent by Leupold from 1933, and I know Volpel died in 1940. There is a small "85" stamped in the body of the compass.
Any PNW surveyors or collectors know much about these?

I don't know anything about it. But that's a nice looking compass. Good find.
@shawn-billings Thank you Shawn. I was pleased when it showed up looking like the listing photos. I've written Leupold to see what they can tell me about it.
Everything appears original, with the exception of two screws in the staff. Philips head strikes me as wrong but I can't find detailed pics to verify. This would have come out at the advent of the philips head. Not sure a compass staff would have rated anything fancy back then...
