As I have started to teach myself how to draw pencil drawings I'm finding that I want to use the old style lead holders we used to use in the field.

I have tons of lead form 2h to 6h but I can't find my old lead holders. I'm talking bout the 2mm size, the real lead holder, koh-i-nor stadler etc.

Does anyone have any that they care to sell? Some just laying about? I prefer the four prong version with the steel barrel.

When I did a search online the prices seemed outrageous to me, but hey, if the market bears it... but a $100 for a lead holder from Russia? come on!!!

Thanks

Dtp

Haven't bought any for years, those I bought were bought from a college book store that offered Civil Engineering Technology and Drafting programs. Same with the lead, my stock runs up to 9 H, which I used in the field on write in the rain field book paper. Also used the 9 H to layout drawings I planned to ink. You did not mention if you still had some lead pointers, probably need one on your drafting table, those pocket pointers worked ok in the field but the desktop units were much better. Lettering spacing was always a problem for me, line work was a breeze. Also liked a drop bow compass for small circles, dig yours out if you have one and stay away from templates.

I bought all of the metal barrel ones that I found at a print shop for $30 in 2007. I still have about 6 left.

I don't use .5mm.

Find some old dusty print shop that used to be a drafting shop. I just got lucky. You can still order them, but they are plastic and I like metal.

thanks for the walk down memory lane! I still have a divot in my right hand middle finger from all the hand drafting steel detailing and survey mapping I used to do.

Made me think of my electric eraser and how excited I was to get an electric lead holder sharpener...oh the simple joys.

Good luck on your search, and if you come across a truck load of them, maybe you could sell a few to your survey brothers and sisters!

Pointer I have! Holders needed!

I even have my old electric eraser, somewhere, my old drafting machine (one of the most awesome drafting tools made) and a box of railroad curves.

I am just in need of some cheap lead holders.

Oh, and the box of railroad curves could be bought if you're interested.

I never went beyond the 6h for my field books. I had a engineering tech ask if I would mind using 2h and I simply asked him if he wouldn't mind just minding his own business. The 6h left an impression, I can only think that the 9h would tear the paper! LOL

Cheers,

PS-

I worked at a place that issued wood lead pencils and 'extenders' to use when the pencil got short.

When asking for a new pencil, you had to show your remaining stub end !

The stub holder was not as fancy as this http://www.etsy.com/listing/19330950/buckeye-burl-wood-buffalo-pencil-stub but it had an eraser on the end.

What a kick in the butt. I live in a giant junk drawer where NOTHING ever gets thrown out. Staring at a pack of Staedtler 2.0mm lead and can't remember where the holder is at. Wait about ten or eleven months and i'll find it while looking for something else.

I still use my old electric eraser on occasion. It works great to get rust off a pocketknife blade or a fish hook.

I'm not at home or I'd go check, I'm sure I've got one or two lying around somewhere.

Hi Don,

You Got me looking around. I expected to find dozens of those lead holders, and the only two that I found are the two that I take notes with. Where did the rest go?

Lead I've got in quantity. Pointers I've got in mass. Abrasive cups I've got boxes of.

No holders.

I'll keep my eye out.

Bob

Rite in the Rain paper is pretty abrasive, I used to use 6H routinely for that. It would be pretty dark. I could see using 9H on Rite in the Rain.
