If you own a laser distance meter for surveying what would you say is a disadvantage about yours and which would you recommend and why? What is ideal?
Are you talking handheld?
I have a couple of TrackLife 60 meter max units
60M level shots
S260M slope trig capabilities with 1/4in mount
I have a Leica Disto Plus. The major drawback is inability to see verify the target beyond 30 feet or so in bright sunlight. The newer ones with a camera might work better in that regard, but I've not tried them.
Love my Leica Disto A8 with the camera, 3x zoom and built in programs. A must if you work by yourself and/or in sunny areas.
I bought mine years ago so I don't know what currently compares. Even at the high price, it was well worth it to me in my solo practice.
I have used a Disto E7500 for the better part of a year. Distances up to 500' to a solid white surface not a problem. I use it for street light, power pole and cell tower heights with little problem.
Video camera allows for locating the point when the red dot is not visible, which is almost always during daylight hours. Night time and twilight or indoors are the only times I don't use the video. Used to set up a total station to get these data but don't need it now.
Worth the money. Added a Leica tripod and adapter for much better control and repeatability.

Yes handheld. Thanks for your reply 😀
Disto D8. I use it for interior and exterior (with camera) on a pole adapter. Great for offset shots (through bluetooth)
The on-board programs are rarely used.
The newer, higher end Distos have quite a few apps on board that are able to provide field calculations. Having the camera function as your viewfinder for outdoor use is great as well. I have been happy with the Disto S910 since using it.
I don't trust them or the person using them on our surveys. Rag tape and sketch please.

If you trust neither technology nor the people working for you, why do you stay in this business??
We use them for interior condo measurements, works better that taping.

That reminds me of a conversation I had with another surveyor that would not accept a pdf copy made by CamScanner of deeds on record for free because his instructions were to bring back copies of deeds from the courthouse at $1 per page.
It is your decision to stay with your antiquated techniques and throw technology away that will save footsteps, time and efforts and create a faster data collection method.

I use a Hilti hand held. Its good for about 600ft to a white surface and 300ft underground in the dust. Its a good fast way for one man measurements. It has some onboard functions that I rarely use.

Just did a duplex to condo map. Really chopped up interior; did it with a rag tape and a helper. Had to get an architect buddy to certify the asbuilt on the map for record. He turned my 4 hour, 2 man job into 1 with his disto (not sure of the brand). I will be getting one.
