Actually, Cracker Jacks compass works well along with the level to home in on the better accuracies needed. Close a 75x30 foot lot within a few feet no problem. You must keep the overhead down to do 20 of these per day at the going rate to put spuds on the table.
The article is essentially correct, however the attached construction site file photo was selected by a non expert.

Land Surveying with a level ?> A little Scary
"Usually, a land surveyor will measure each location multiple times, averaging the results to determine the true position of that point. The location of boundaries and easements will then be marked on your land. when the measurements are complete and have been marked on the land, the land surveyor will generally walk the exact property together with you, pointing out the landmarks measuring each point, such as a plastic or metal stake. Then, the surveyor will advise you on any differences between your current survey and previous surveys or records of the land, including any areas where neighboring property owners have encroached on the land.
Each time a professional land survey is complete, the exact property lines as stated from the licensed surveyor end up being the legal boundaries of your property.'

It's a good example of what the public perception may be..
In this case the "republic" is Central Utah.
Not to much said about retracement, every survey I suppose is a resurvey based upon measurements. About the only thing a landowner can be sure of is their boundaries are going to change and move from where they have been respected for a hundred years or so when you get this sort of survey.
The picture might be a level but GPS rules.
