Tired of making up those CSV and DXF job backgrounds
Want an easy way to load data for reconnaisance
?ÿ
I've been playing with the WFS features of Access
Here in New Zealand , I can find the data I need online and load it directly
Saves time, makes it easy
*sigh*
Maybe now the higher-ups will listen to me when I tell them we need to store all our control and found monumentation on the web...can't tell you how often we have spent valuable time re-observing a monument that we just observed for a different project two months prior....or scratching around for a monument that we determined was gone six months ago. Or setting brand new control half a block away from control that a different crew set within a year.
Oh, come on guys.?ÿ That's half the fun.
Memories are what modern technology is attempting to wipe out.?ÿ If we don't exercise our memories routinely we are more likely to believe what the powers-that-be tell us has happened.
Was it "1984" or "Brave New World" where the old newspapers were rewritten to provide more convenient information??ÿ This is a test.?ÿ It is only a test.?ÿ We now return you to your regular programming.

@rover83?ÿ

But think of all the billable hours that can't be logged if you make super clean efficient and easy.... ??? ?????ÿ
That is actually part of the problem.?ÿ Clients want to see you sweat to earn the money they had to sweat to earn so they could hire you.
I remember the day I supposedly took over an hour to calculate the volume of a dam about a half mile long, which I actually accomplished in less than five minutes, because I had previously programmed my TI calculator to perform that function for me based on a few inputs.?ÿ The client, in the next room visiting with another engineer, was totally amazed that I could come up with the total volume of dirt required in ONLY an hour or so.
Maybe now the higher-ups will listen to me when I tell them we need to store all our control and found monumentation on the web.
@rover83 So, Run your own QGis server for the office.
?ÿ
@jimcox?ÿ
Yeah that would be the way to do it. Interestingly enough I don't have permission to install even the programs we are required to use.
We have four offices in this region alone, with anywhere from 10-15 crews and 20-30 projects at any given day. Throw in 15-20 PMs with different clients, different deliverables and totally different ways of processing, QC, and storing the data and it gets messy fast.
We do have a top-notch GIS team, so I think I will have to talk to them. I use Arc pretty regularly but I'm not a server-side guy, and I put in enough hours off the clock that I don't really care to take on another side project just for it to get squashed because I didn't set it up right.
@rover83 Back before TBC when TGO was still the latest i worked with a firm to aid them in doing just that. TGO had a report for rtk hz vt precision and i just customized that along with the point name and method. RTK Onserved control point topo etc. and of course traverse data. I basically at that time just made attribute tables and dbf4 files and joined them in arc. I don??t think excel even does dbf4 anymore. Anyway after they had the process down every job went to the gis team and those reports and it was all internal to the large firm. Everything from a topo shot to control etc. all on nad83 harn at the time. So before any project the gis team would get a request from the survey or engineering department. Gis folks would run a query and pull all data in that area based of the request. They would look at it and have everything even down to the file cabinet and drawer number where hard data was stored. It was nice once as i was training one of the new crews on a job and they didn??t have to locate much as 3 different jobs had almost all of it already. One of those things like we did a alta now we need an update. Ok run traverse locate corners and walk around and see if anything changed deals. Thats the power of gis storing vector data and raster as well as notes and organization of where things are even in file cabinets in office. Then be able to quickly pull everything together in a cad or survey way. And say I need this dont need that need to check this and so on.
