A few weeks ago I mentioned the Inter-American Geodetic Survey (IAGS), which, as I posted, I first learned about from an old National Geographic article. I made a pdf of the article, which appeared in 1956.

The pdf file is large, 5 MB, but is a very good read. For those younger folk who were brought up on GPS, it gives insight into how control was established in the "old days". And some great pictures.

Makes one a little bit nostalgic...

I went to Balboa High School in the 1950s. I recall passing by their buildings at Fort Curundu, Albrook AFB, and Fort Clayton. Never went in as a kid. Got my first job as a Map Draftsman with a recommendation by Bill Parkhurst who in later years, I found out that he trained my Commanding Officer, COL Spacek when they were in the IAGS after WWII.

Small world.
