I was asked by KAPS to attend the IPLSA conference as the Kentucky representative.
A few notes about the IPLSA conference:
The organization of the conference was outstanding. The organizers did a really good job of having everything flow smoothly.
The quality of the presentations was also very good. If you ever have the opportunity to attend the Todd Horton, PE, PLS presentation on ethics, I would highly recommend doing so. In the past 15 or so years of attending courses, that was the best ethics presentation I have attended.
In between sessions, I spoke with a few of the Illinois Surveyors. I have to say everyone I spoke with seemed to be a true professional and a pleasure to speak with. One of the gentleman I spoke with had his son in attendance. The son was receiving his license at the lunch membership meeting - both seemed to be quality individuals. I also spoke with one of the employees of a fellow that used to post frequently on the old site about the industrial alignment surveys. This was a very interesting discussion.
The IPLSA did a few things that I plan on suggesting to my state society.
One being the distribution of course materials as a downloadable PDF as opposed to to printing everything out. Each individual could then either print a copy or could just look at the power point presentation on the screen. Seems like good environmental sense and a cost savings on all that printing.
Another being the ceremony recognizing new licensees. I believe KAPS used to do that (or something similar), but we have not done so in a while. I think it is a good idea and hope we can work on implementing that as a part of our conference program at KAPS.
nice report on the conference.
I attended as an exhibitor and a presenter, and I thought it was a very well done and well attended conference as well.
Good bunch of surveyors there in Illinois.
I was there also. I thought it was a good conference also. I spent almost all my time with Jeff Lucas when he presented his book on Illlinois law. I think its a very good book and has a lot of case law as it relates to everyday surveying.
To those who don't know, the Illinoi Land Surveyors Assoc. hire Jeff Lucas to write a book on Illiois law. His presentation was excellent and he went over the book chapter by chapter. I missed two of the sessions since I need some ethics also.
David: You needed some ethics? Really? I'm surprised, I wouldn't have expected it from you.....Oh, I think you meant you needed some ethics hours......
BTW, it was good to see you and all the other MEAI alumni too......
Can any of you who were in attendance shed some
light on what appears to be a pretty sizable contingent of S.I.T.s in attendance?
I don't have any idea of the numbers in attendance at the KAPS conference, but I was pleased to see the many S.I.T.s listed in attendance at the IPLSA conference.
If we (in Kentucky) do not have that kind of attendance by S.I.T.s, then we really need to address why that would be.

I can't really answer that. Its not like they have to attend to get PDH's. Many of them could be thinking ahead to taking the PLS exam and think the conference will help them. I'm not sure how many were at the conference in Illinois this year, but in the past the numbers have been near a thousand. It could be the overall numbers are higher than Kentucky, so the number of SIT's appears to be higher also.

You guys are really doing something right if you had close to 1000 SIT in attendance. How many LS attend? We don't have numbers anywhere near that in Oregon.

I was thinking the same thing John. Our numbers have been roughly 450-600 over the last few years.

No where near 1000. Total conference registration was in the high 600's.
Maybe 10% of that could be SIT's.
There are only 1200 Illinois Land Surveyors licensed, and many of them, like Tommy Young, live out of state......

My goof. I know in some past years we have had close to a 1000 in attendance, but that is total numbers, exhibtors, sit's, ls's etc. The numbers have been down the last few years.
