We reconnoitered a park today in preparation for a topo. The parking lot has some kind of metal mesh partially beneath the gravel. What is it? How would you code it in your data collector?

Looks and sounds like one of those eco-friendly surfaces where water drains through instead of off.
It may have a patented name.
No that's Geo grid. Its ot supposed to be exposed. But you have lost some gravel at that spot.

The poly-plastic structure is a geo-grid, I believe the name is universal not trademarked.
It's intent is to stabilize the soil or gravel making it more erosion resistant, if used on slopes and/or stronger if used occasionally for vehicular traffic. It is designed to be filled with soil (then planted) or with gravel, but also be less visible. Popular uses is for overflow grass parking areas, just the driveways of same or a perimeter drive around a schoolhouse to keep fire trucks from sinking up to their hubs.
Call it what it gravel filled grid or cellular structure. It is a structure because it is man made and improves the structure of the earth.
It is a lightweight improvement over the steel Marston Matting (sometimes aluminum which could be flown in) used to strengthen runways during WW II. The greater vertical depth of the grid allows the soil or gravel to be a confined part and add strength.

I can't remember if we have a code for a parking lot. We might just use NG (natural ground) and write "GEO-GRID BENEATH GRAVEL" in the field book.
More than likely is is made of mats put down to stabilize the gravel and prevent rutting, as well as provide a stable cart way for emergency vehicles. Just another form of a grassed paver block.
Its trade name isnt necessarily the best code, so in my universe, if I had to be in a decision making position, would call it?ÿ

For erosion control. There are numerous devices and mats etc. and adding trade names could be confusing.
Ultimately depends on how much cross coding occurs with the field and then finish drafting software share without reinventing the wheels with constantly new codes.

That seems vague to me, as it could apply to many things.?ÿ How about ECmat or ECgrid?
Like lawyers, making it vague allows for broader interpretations unless a common code or term has already been agreed upon and selected for users.
That being said, I'm still just getting up to speed, and my database brain likes to organize stuff for its own pleasure regardless of what the rest of us do or want.
