A few weeks ago I posted my variation on a tack ball, made from the magnets of an old hard drive.

Well I have found another use for parts of that old drive, I have been carrying the spindles around , use it reflect the sun down into manholes when doing as built or inverts of deep manholes, provided its sunny , makes for the best torch.

But today their real use was discovered…

Problem : how to mark a beacon / point on top of a high pillar cap of a wall, cant climb it and have no ladder ?

Solution : Take the hardrive spindle, screw it underneath the receiver and bam you are good to do a below bubble plumb shot on something above your eyeline. Lucky the diameter hole of the spindle matches the pole.

Worked like a bomb.

Neat idea! I'll have to play around with that a bit.

That's a good idea. I carry a World War 1 shaving mirror with a drill hole in the center. I may have to upgrade after seeing that...

I do the same thing by turning on the front facing camera on my smartphone, holding it above the bubble, and watching the bubble on the screen.

Great idea. Surveyors are usually the innovative ones by necessity.
I usually use the mirror on my Silva Ranger, but sometimes I can't reach that high.

Wouldn't you be viewing a mirror image of the bubble and have to move the rod the opposite direction of what you see? That could screw me up. 😛
