There have been some threads on how to measure parking lot stripes for topo, and other applications for lots of small targets. [msg=318812]thread[/msg] [msg=240795]thread[/msg]
I made these 0.10 ft cubes with reflective surface, effectively 0 offset prisms if you place the front-center line on the point. Offset 0.10 if they are up against a wall or something. They have a small nail in the center for sighting, and so have target height 0.05 ft. Stack them if you need to clear a small obstacle.
The Hillman brand of reflective surface seems to work best for me. These targets work out to approaching a hundred yards. There is a near distance limit of maybe 10 feet depending on the angle of incidence. I don't understand exactly why this is greater than the near limit for a peanut prism.

With flash:
I have put Reflexite tape around different sizes of pvc to slip over the top of pipe and rebar, take shot and use a constant to be in the center of the object.
The tape is amazing. The first time I used it shot a one inch square at over 600ft and have since have completely covered the back of my gammon reels.
😉
[sarcasm]They still make gammon reels?[/sarcasm]
My bob hasn't been out of the truck in over a year.:-P
I put reflective tape on the back of 2" binder clips and clipped them to 4' stakes for topoing in tall grass. Works great and you can get shots a ways away.
No suggestions from Kent on a better design yet?
Some tips that I've used. Use 0 offset on your instrument. Put 1" squares on cheap formica and screw in where possible. On concrete, add a small dab of rubbber cement before applying. Let dry. Sticks great. Add smal dot with a marker, then cover with heavy duty clear packing tape. Steel guide rail posts, just stick it on. You'd be surprised how small a piece you need in close applications.
