Two of the most unique survey monuments I've ever set on. One is at the oldest lighthouse in the state of New York, located in Montauk, New York.

The other is located in Orrs Island, ME.

Beautiful, Zulu!! (I like your Zulu name, BTW! 🙂 )

Your GPS receiver toy there looks like he needs a name. Maybe the Enterprise? 😉

about 2001 I was at a State-owned lighthouse (not surveying) and I remember noticing a really nice corner monument, I think it was stone or concrete and was stamped US-something.

I have seen the Montauk Lighthouse from the water while fishing many times.

The area around the lighthouse (East Hampton Town) is inhabited year round by a tribe known as the Bonackers. They trace their roots to the New England settlers in the 1600's. The Bonack dialect is more New England then New York as in cah not car. An affirmative answer from one Bonacker to another Bonacker is, "Yes, Yes Bub". In it's hayday (1600's to 1880's) the tribe extended from East Hampton Town to the western end of Southampton Town, then the railroad came with people from New York City and the Bonackers were pushed back east.

Dave,

The lighthouse was built and owned by the Federal Government till it was turned over to the Montauk Historical Society.

You must have had a really tall tripod to set up over that light house, or did you just set up on the roof?

That was the same case here. It was owned by the US until Deeded to the State probably with rights retained to operate the lighthouse. They don't need the Fresnel lens anymore, just an electric beacon that goes around and around.

I know that I have more pictures. I took hundreds of photos while working on that project. I just need to go through my CD's and get them downloaded. We started that project in Portsmouth, NH worked north to Orrs Island, ME, and then south to Charleston, SC. We were doing airborne GPS and LIDAR observations on the erosion of the eastern seaboard. Talk about a working vacation! I was on th road from July 2005 until December 22, 2005.

Very interesting... I do plan on going back someday just to get more into the history of the place. I really enjoyed myself and the people were awesome!

Well, it fits with your "Zulu" name, Zulu!! Zulu and the Enterprise go together like peas and carrots. 🙂

Carls instrument is named "Chuck". Carl put a Santa hat on top of Chuck for a holiday photo. It was really cute, actually. Seeing that yours now has a name and that you take wonderful photos, you could put a hat on top of Enterprise too, for a photo session. 🙂
