I have one that I bought at a survey supply company some years ago, that fell out of my vest last week and has gone the way of the dodo bird. In need of a new one. I didn't like the old one b/c on bright sunny days I couldn't always see the laser. Any recommendations?
I have a Stanley FatMax that I like. I actually have (2), but they are different models. The 9v model uses decimal feet. The 3 AAA model, uses fractions of an inch and feet. It is just as accurate as the decimal feet, but you have to convert.
Not sure you'll find a sun friendly device.
I've an older Disto and have talked with Leica about replacing but there's no improvement from my understanding.
The little sighting device isn't a real help IMO.
If anyone claims otherwise then I'd suggest some real sun filled demonstration.
Keep us informed. I'm interested in this
I have an old leica. Dropped it and the band cable for the screen came loose. I ended up using a piece of a shingle to hold the band cable in place, never been a problem since.

A sun friendly device could be Leica Disto's, starting from model E7500 they have a built-in camera.
I have a Leica Disto D510 and it has a screen for viewing targets. Works well for those longer shots.
I'll third the Leica Disto with camera It's a must here in sunny florida. 3 zoom levels and I can't work without it!
I am curious. What do you guys use them for? I used a Bosch (I forget the model number.) to get interior dimensions. That is about all I have ever used them for. Please enlighten me. Thanks.

I use mine for sewer inverts (that are dry), exterior dimensions of buildings and floor to ceiling measurements for condo surveys. My Leica Disto will calc SF with two clicks, volume with 3.
Ceiling heights, wall to wall, kerb to kerb, buildings in general.
Last week I needed hopper heights for a fertiliser plant, and joist heights.
Soffit heights.
I read with TS then also checked direct height from floor.
As StL says inverts when dry.
If I've got it on me I'll read offsets to fences, otherwise tape job.
They are remarkable devices.
18 months back my Disto went in the river, totally submerged, water running out of it.
Took all apart, batteries out and air dried for few weeks.
Hasn't missed a beat since.
Anyone interfacing via bluetooth to their data collector? More trouble than it is worth?

I interface to a tablet by bluetooth for measuring buildings using a special software for building surveys. It saves time writing down measurements.

That sounds interesting. What software is on your tablet?

Nice teaser! What software is that?

It works fairly well. Bit of a learning curve though. For me though scanning is the best way to measure complex buildings.
So I've never used an LDM. Could it be used to "2 tape" in a fence corner? What are the things that are located easier while using it?

Have a 10 year old Leica Disto D3. Daily user, works great. Slope measurement a plus.
I use a Leica Disto...it has a tripod and video, a lot easier than the old handheld one you look in the side.
I used it for measuring to put up crown molding in my house...changed it to 1/32" worked great. Hold it up in the corner, hit the opposite wall at about the same drop from the ceiling. Way easier than trying to use a tape.
I've often thought about whether a Disto could be put to good use for instrument/prism/antenna height measurement.

I'll up that one - Why hasn't Leica integrated the Disto into the total stations and scanners? If you opt for the laser plumment then that should include disto for automatic HI.
