Trying to research a new project and got stuck in the town database looking for Iroquois Avenue. Turns out the subdivision plan spells it incorrectly and the town just went ahead and approved it. Even the street signs say Iriquois Avenue... I'm stupefied.

Slidell, LA

Selden, NY

or

Tulsa, OK

A search has a street by that name in each city.

Perhaps it is like the various spellings of Miami.

Type it in with the "i" in place of the "o". Then tell Google to only give results for the name using the "i".

You can spell cat with a K and you can spell boys with a Z... It's still incorrect.

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensi bl riten styl.

Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi TU understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

After the French, British, and Spanish came up with names spelled them in their own languages for the Native American tribes, either directly or through the exonyms used by their neighbors, there is a wide variety of possible names and spellings. Who is to say what the "correct" spelling is?

I wouldn't say we have the final word on this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_American_name_controversy

We commonly refer to a group as Sioux, which is a shortening of a derogatory exonym, but they call themselves Lakota, Dakota, etc.

People who until the early 1800's lived in Iowa somehow got the name Ioway, although they called themselves Baxoje or variant spellings, and are now known to the US Government as the "Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma."

Ojibwe and Chppewa are exonames for those who called themselves Anishinaabeg.

The Mesquaki / Mesquakie / Meskwaki in Iowa now use the latter because it avoids the spelling from the French who were rather nasty to them a few centuries ago. Actually, the French first called them the Renards, which is the French word for Fox, derived from one clan instead of the whole tribe. This led to the official name used by the US Government to this day, confusing the French source and the name of the Meskwaki's historical allies, so they are "the Sac and Fox of the Mississippi in Iowa."

I suspect nearly every tribe has had multiple names.

There is Maine Street in Lawrence, Kansas. I have wondered how frequently that is assumed to be an incorrect spellimg. Many of the streets carry State names. Massachusetts is the primary street in the downtown area and Iowa is the primary north-south through route (US Hwy 59)

Would this be in Ashburnham, MA? Iriquois Drive connects Shore Drive with Goldmine Road.

Yes, It was a subdivision drawn in 1965. Approved with no monuments of the roads or the lots.
