Gold Rush- "GPS DON'T LIE!"

I was watching Gold Rush tonight and they were out looking for their claim to set up shop. One dude had a GPS and a map and swore that they were one the claim. Todd says "Are you sure."? He says, " yeah, man. GPS don't lie!". We all know how this story ends. They ended up mobilizing tens of thousands of dollars of equipment and ended up 1500 ft or so away from the claim they leased.

My wife and I got a good kick out of it. I told her GPS possibly lies a LOT depending on how you're applying it...different coordinate systems, factors, etc.

These dudes rolled out a boat-load of equipment and time without hiring a a Professional to help them guarantee they were on the right land. I don't really fault them, I just hope that the general public starts to see the value in our services.

I would imagine every surveyor out there got a laugh out of that when he said those words. I don't know why, but Gold Rush is one of the the only shows I watch religiously. It fascinates me.

I watched the first season and can't stand the pompous people. When they got angry at the redhead when ultimately it was their own blunders, it just hacked me off. lol@wrong coordinates.

They wanted to put me on the show as the surveyor last year then that fell apart....guess this serves them right.

The show wouldn't last a week if they start putting people who have most of their cognitive abilities. They have assembled this group of individuals who can talk on camera and appear otherwise normal but when they attempt to work or make critical decisions, they have all the reasoning and common sense of Laurel and Hardy. I hope the kid strikes it, though. He is the only one with a lick of sense.

I marked a point on a handheld Garmin just so I could come back later. When I do that I always go to the point I just marked just to make sure it didn't do something way off (marginal canopy conditions). The thing told me to go east 2 tenths of a mile. OK, try again. Now it says go 15', that's more like it.

lol Dang....makes sense Daryl couldn't get on then.

(Hmmm....I wonder though: Maybe I could get a shot at that show.);-)

I started in surveying working for a coal mining company and have been around a couple of rock quarries as well. Had been wondering about a few things the first two seasons. Then the mine inspector showed up and I got my answers. This bit with GPS is just more of the same. If you remember last year the young fellow working his granddad's property talked about the limits of his GPS & I thought had it about right. Said if he needed a better location it would need to be surveyed. Wonder if that is when they were talking to you?

I like watching Gold Rush...I was thinking the same thing when "Dave" is walking around with his hand held. Then the native Alaskan drilling holes is adding his on take on the depth of his bores...You've got to admire their courage and work ethics but sometimes I'm thinking whoa, whoa don't do that, or why did you do this??? I guess its easy to be an armchair quarterback, Teddy Roosevelt would love these guys!

I saw that episode and it busted my gut when that happened. From 2 perspectives. First was the horror; second, it was just plain funny.

We all know how quickly GPS can go south and why. Owners have the right to survey their own property, at least in CA. But how tragic it could have been if they started to mine the wrong parcel. They even dug 2 test holes on the wrong property. That must have cost a bit.

Wish I could have been there and scoped it out for them - for a little bit o' gold! ;).

We have a hard time with this show, even tho we do watch it - the men seem like they're so clueless at times it makes us wonder how they can afford all that equipment. We're pulling for Parker, he's a sharp young man; the others we wonder about.
