Journal of my journey over the mountains by George Washington is available on Project Gutenberg. Very interesting read with explanatory annotations by the editor, and maps.

I visit Gutenberg daily and often find literary gems, including the original Tom Swift books from my childhood.

That's back when surveying was a prominent profession to be engaged.
I have read that Washington became wealthy man by marrying Martha. She was a widow of a heir of a planter family that owned a lot of land and slaves. She received a 1/3 of his estate (children 2/3)and when she married GW, he controlled her estate and the children's. He already had land holdings from his family and was educated as a surveyor. This plat was probably part of that process.

Jump started my old laptop last night that hasn't been used for a few months and noticed the Gutenberg Project tab in the top bar menu.
