Geodimeter CU program lost!

I put a Geodimeter CU on my 5603 robot. Turned it on and quickly got the one beep, then two beeps (like it went into robotic mode.) Absolutely no display on the CU. I could tell the LCD had power, but nothing was displayed.
I removed it and hooked it up to battery power. Turned it on and got the message "Program lost!" no response from any buttons.

Has anyone had this happen? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Geodimeter motto: "When we're good, we're very, very good, but when we're bad, we're horrid!"

Per the manual.... to re-boot the keyboard, remove from the instrument and connect to external power. Start the keyboard by keeping the "CON" and "PWR" key depressed at the same time. In the display will be 2 options, choose #2 "reboot" and a re-boot will occur.
NOTE -In this case all functions will be re-set and all self made u.d.s. will be lost.

You might try that....Otherwise the service department can go in and pull up error codes sometimes to figure out what happened.

The rebooting sequence had no effect. Still no response from the keys, no option to do a reboot. Just the same error message. I'm guessing "Program Lost!" means just that, a re-install is necessary. 🙁

Probably was time to have the internal battery replaced anyway...I think the battery is only good for 2 years on those units.

I can't remember ever having an internal battery replaced on the CU. (that doesn't mean it did't happen) I do know the internal battery on the instrument lasts about 2 years.

I just had the internal batteries changed in my 600, and there are actually four of them, two on both the instrument and the CU, that have to be changed about every 5 years. If they go bad, you lose your onboard software.

That happened to my former boss ... He kept a "back up" Geo600 in the closet, he let it sit a year or two, but when he needed it, the software was gone ... If you use the instrument regularly, it will give a warning message when the battery is weak. Supposedly, you have at least 90 days to get the batts changed once you start seeing the warning. If you don't use it, then you don't see the warning, and it just dies on you,

Was the CU faceplate you installed not used for a while?

You have to get it to a shop that can replace the batteries and reload the software.

And tell them you had all of the programs...I'm sure you did right?

At this point I don't think they are still selling programs for the CU, but you never know.

It actually had a great road staking program. Program 39? Pulling that from my dusty memory - Probably wrong.

Prog 39 was indeed 3D roadline and it was great, 29 was 2D roadline if I remember correctly. Used 24 and 39 for most things

The CU uses two 3V CR 2430 batteries induction soldered to tabs. You can jump the tabs and remove the batteries and install new ones, but, it wouldn't be easy. Induction soldering equipment is around, but, for most of us, just isn't. Solder a big heat sink to a small tab is dangerous when the big heat sink is a battery and is best left to the professionals. I send mine in, regardless this is what they look like:

There is nothing scientific about the warning, they are set to go off at an interval. Memory says 3 years from installation. The CU and the instrument do not test for voltage level

I have a Geodolite 504 in which the internal battery reached end of life and failed. As a result the 504's memory lost its power and along with it the internal programs, essentially the OS for the instrument. The instrument has been well taken care of and otherwise is still in excellent shape.

A few calls to former Geodimeter dealers turned Trimble indicated that from a practical and economical (think extortion) perspective, the programs could not be reloaded. The instrument was figuratively toast. They did offer "a good deal on a trade-in."

My reaction was that if they wouldn't arrange for reloading the programs this time, they'd do it again. I didn't even think of buying into another similar scenario that would occur in the future. From my perspective, it's similar to having to buy another computer just because of a power failure. Can you imagine, in such a case, not being able to reload the OS or some program into a computer or calculator? Who would expect this?

I'll never again buy a Geodimeter product. I won't buy one from their successor, Trimble.

It's a phase all manufacturers go through from time to time and they never learn how much damage they do to their reputations.

Some years ago Leica did it with their early GPS units and lost a huge amount of the European market to Trimble R6 and |R8s.

I recall that happening on my Bergstrand Geodimeter.?ÿ?ÿ I had to send it in and have the whole thing re loaded.?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ Luckily, it was still under the 10 year, soup to nuts warranty.?ÿ I think they even replaced the rubber keypad !?ÿ

Do you have a dealer that handles Geodimeter issues???ÿ

Good luck!?ÿ
