Nate Plain Ole H2O a few degrees cooler than outside
temperature. No Iced water ! Should start off fully hydrated and not consume any liquid other than the water as most drinks have sugar.
Funny metals like magnesium need to be added to system to prevent cramp through food intake so must eat hearty breakfast and dinner (tea) .
To regain nightly appetite after long hot day in field take a gulp of port or sherry and mulche in mouth for a minute and then spit out. Clears all baked mucus and congealed froth from inside mouth and refreshes taste buds. Then open a couple of icy cold beers.....before eating a huge dinner.

I drink lots of water, and some flavor packets just to add some flavor. I prefer that over just plain water.
I've started to try to lay off the sodas, and drink mostly water and tea, and I do feel better.
RADU you nailed it
Drink lots of water the night BEFORE you are out in the heat. Don't wait until that morning and CERTAINLY don't wait until you're thirsty. If you're going to drink Gatorade (or any sports drink) drink at least 4 times that much water.

spit out?
when i was just a young pup, my mother always told me, "finish your cocktail son, there are sober children in China"
A friend of mine had a heat stroke a few years back while working out in the field. He was drinking water only. The doctor told him if he had only drank a 20 oz Gatorade that he would have been fine. He can't be out in the extreme heat for more than a few minutes now.
> Be VERY careful with the Gatorade and electrlyte addatives!! I had a friend in he National Guard that chugged Gatorade to beat the mississippi heat. He ended up in the hospital because he blew his electrolytes all out of balance.
> The best thing to use is simply water. We provide our c rews with cases of bottled water and insist that they use it. Some add Crystal Lite to the bottle of watyer with the noon meal for a change of pace.
Everyone is different though. On a real hot and humid day, I can't do just water - I get a raging headache no matter how much water I drink. I absolutely have to do a 1/2 and 1/2 mix of water and Gatorade. I can't do straight Gatorade though - too syrupy...
Water only for this ol' boy...
Come'on Newton, how hot can it get at Boothbay, ME? 🙂
Gatorade
I have a copy of the "Insider's Recipes Master Edition". It has recipes for all sorts of popular foods....including KFC and candy bars. It also included this recipe:
1 pack unsweetened Kool Aid (any flavor)
2 quarts cold water
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teas. salt
1/2 cup orange juice
Mix together. This equals the electrolyte replacement found
in many popular drinks on the market. Great for a hot summer!
I haven't tried it, but then I'm not working outside much right now...:-( 🙂
Near the beginning of June inland we have had a few brutal ones - nothing compared to the south obviously, but it was over 90 and humid.
i just got home from a weekend in both lake placid and saratoga springs. those placid locals were compaining about the 70 deg f highs.
If I learned one thing from my time in the Army it was the importance of knowing the signs of heat exhaustion (heavy sweating, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea) and paying attention to them. We were monitored year around during training or periods of heavy exertion for signs of heat exhaustion. Water consumption was mandatory and on those rare occasions when someone became dizzy or nauseous they were often treated to an IV by the medics. The Army understood the consequences of pushing us or allowing us to push ourselves too far.
Like most things in life, knowing what you're dealing with and moderation are key. Water alone will not get me through a hot humid day. Chugging Gatorade or similar drinks is guaranteed to give me heartburn and intestinal distress. Having a couple sips of Gatorade each time I stop to for water is the solution for me.
We're all different. Know the signs, pay attention to what your body is telling you, and have enough sense to stop before you hurt yourself.
Thanks Stephen.
That answer fits me too. After I go through a gallon of water, then I need about a quart and a half of gatorade, or something.
