I am looking for a radio that can handle being in the field, impact and water resistant would be a big plus. AM/FM and Ipod compatible.
Would be spending time in a boat so it would need to be able to handle a splash or two of water.
Weather radio would be a plus, but not a requirement.
Thanks.

I know it doesn't meet the waterproof requirement IDK about IPOD but does have FM and they are stinkin cheep. Baofeng UV5Re Dual-Band 136-174/400-480 MHz FM Ham Two-way Radio for about $35 per radio. Way better than the FRS/gmrs crap. Still is china junk but I've had my two for over a year and still working. I just run them on the color dot frequencies. For what they can do for the price its amazing. If anything happens to them just buy a couple more. I know they have improved the radio with the UV-82 and I think it is at the same price. So that's what I would get.

I did not find that radio, I did find similar model that had 1w and 4w selection.

How far can you communicate with the Baofeng Ham Radios?

Just searched amazon.com again and typed UV-82 (which states it's a commercial model) and one came up for $35. I compare them to the motorola SP-50, because that is the only other radio i have used. They are just as good and to be able to do dual mode VHF/UHF is cool with FM radio playing while I'm not talking is nice. I listen to talk radio. If I think my base radio is not working I just type that frequency in and give it a check. You can program them with chirp software and hit some ham repeaters if needed. For $35, its a great purchase.

Just read the reviews. Those guys have a better description than I do.

The stated requirements are AM/FM and Ipod compatible. Am I correct in thinking this means no transmitting capability, ability to receive AM and FM broadcast stations, ability to upload stored music such as MPEG, and optionally, ability to receive weather broadcasts near 162 MHz? If so, sorry, I don't bother with any of that except weather broadcasts.

The ones I've seen in use were handheld and could transmit a few watts with a rubber duck antenna. My experience with such radios suggests around one mile under average rural conditions. If there is a repeater in a good location, a range of 10 miles to the repeater might be possible. Extreme range is about 240,000 miles, but you have to be standing at the focus of the Arecibo radio observatory.

But the original poster may not be looking for something that can transmit. Nothing in the original post mentions two-way communication.
