Does anyone know why a defense contractor would want me to do "layout" for their Faro Laser Tracking system? I have a meeting with the company tomorrow, just wanted to know if anyone here knows anything about these things and how they would relate to surveying. What kind of accuracies are we talking about with these Laser Trackers?

It sounds to me like they need the location of the tracker in a specific place so that the data produced by it's tracking is on their datum.

Your total station will not come close to a Laser Tracker accuracy.

They probably need you to bring in world,NGS,site coordinates to their small, specific project area.

Here is the link to the newly announced, latest, greatest FARO Laser Tracker.

Very high speed and accuracy, very short range, hence the need for many set ups.

I think you have it Adam. They will need multiple locations for their tracker. It will be interesting to hear about the accuracy they need and how the surveyor plans to achieve that. Kind of reminds me of a survey RFP that we were short-listed for. We were the last firm in and the presentation started off by the potential client stating that we were the only surveyors responding that said the required accuracy for the project as they had described it could not be met. Oh boy! This could be an interesting story too.

Faro is a hot little company right now. We recently used the Faro Scanner and had to produce a scan product on State plane coordinates. You will need to establish control Targets at various points throughout their scan area that can be seen from the scanner. The scanners stitch all the scans together with inter-visible targets such as scan globes, paper targets on hard surfaces or common points. Then the software tech can fit the resultant scans to a control set. Keep in mind control is not established at the scanner set ups but at points within view of the scanner.
