Ya'll

I have an HP-48 with TDS which includes a routine for calculating vertica curve grades. After I run through the routine, I enter my values into an excel spreadsheet to get my gutter grades, top of curb, face of walk, back of walk, etc.

I would like to find an excel spreadsheet which will calculate the vertical curve grades, that way I wouldn't have to hand enter them (source of error).

I have tried one from MDOT, but I can't seem to get it to work. It wants a "K" value or something, which I don't have.

The only information generally supplied is the following:
Length of Vertical Curve
PVI Station
PVI Elevation
Grade In
Grade Out

Thanx in advance to a wonderful group.
🙂

Info.

I am just looking for something that works very similar to the HP.

Input a station, or a series of station, or a regular interval (25')and let her rip.

I tried writing one myself, but I got lost in the subtracting of negative grades (I think)

thanx.

I have one somewhere that will give you what you are looking for. I have to find it. You could modify the spreadsheet to calc the other grades as well, but it will take some knowledge of VBA to get it. I'll search for it.

The K value is an indicator of the site distance on a road, different road speeds and road classes need different K values .

The length of the vertical curve is dependent on sight lines, which in turn are governed by overtaking distances and stopping distance for a particular road speed.

The length of the curve is a product of K x A, were A is the algebraic change in gradient between the two tangents, expressed as a percentage.

Well in any case thats how we do road design here in South Africa.

Simply put, K is the distance in feet along a vertical curve that it takes to get 1% change in grade. A smaller K value would be a more abrupt change in grade.

It looks to me like it does EXACTLY what I am looking for. Has the same input as the HP (with the addition of BVC elev.

My email in profile is good.

Many thanx,

Geezer:-D

Geezer,
No email that I can see in your profile, and site messaging won't let me attach files.

Message sent, please respond to the email attached within.

An Excel sheet for vertical curves is the first thing I do with my civil students in Surveying 2 and then calculating horizontal curves. Excel is an EXCELlent program!
