I got my wife a frying pan and a vacuum cleaner for xmas.

?ÿ

I got my wife ............ whatever my credit card bill says I got her when I look at it in January ;)?ÿ I gave up trying to figure out what she wants for Christmas years ago and just point her in the general direction of the mall/online shopping and tell her not to bankrupt us with the credit card bill.

?ÿ

@jaccen?ÿ

I wasn't even aware you could use cannet if it wasn't painted yellow. Although that's probably the reason you had to select rtcm as CMRx is a Trimble property thing.?ÿ

A brx7 on cannet with the Leica TCRP1203+ both running on the same software would be awesome. Unfortunately then I wouldn't have other guys in our office to share and obtain new tricks from. We have a lot of good guys and a couple are particularly good with the software and have been using it longer than I.?ÿ

@timd1971?ÿ

Not for xmas but I picked up a 1970s Electrolux vacuum off the side of the road (neighbor was moving and getting rid of everything). The wife was not impressed but that thing is amazing and even had a new filter in it. I said it's saving wear and tear on our newer vacuum. Apparently my grandmother had the same (expensive) vacuum way back in the day and my aunt killed it sucking up water after a fish tank incident. A sticker right on top says don't suck up water.?ÿ

@olemanriver?ÿ

I have no interest in getting licensed as that means working in the office full time (once your licensed)...

I was worried about that too, but in my experience it turned out to not be true.?ÿ In fact, I feel like I have more power to do whatever I want after becoming licensed.

The school thing is a real concern, but you might be surprised at the freedom you have with being licensed.

My wife and I agreed a long time ago that we wouldn't go out of our way to get anything for each other on birthdays and Christmas.?ÿ We agreed that we don't really need anything.?ÿ If either of us wants to get something, they go ahead and get it when they decide to get it.?ÿ We keep four checking accounts.?ÿ She controls two and I control two.?ÿ We can write on any of them, but, keep it this way anyway.

@holy-cow?ÿ

I wear a Santa style hat that says "Bah Humbug" as a protest against commercialism. The season is good for religious reasons if you are so inclined, for brightening up a season of darkness, and an excuse to visit friends and relatives and overeat. The gift exchanges are an annoyance for me and a burden for some.

My wife has mostly acquiesced, and only gets me trivial stuff for Xmas unless she knows for sure I want it. My sister and brother agreed to stop exchanging among the adults by the time grandkids came along.

My stepdaughter likes to shop and gets me stuff I usually don't like. A sweatshirt with printing on it, (I try to never wear shirts with printed words), stocks that aren't the style I always wear. Etc.

My sister in law made a big deal out of my Bah Humbug and gets me gag gifts. A candy box with rocks in the compartments. Because I said I want nothing, she got me "nothing", an empty box.

I should have been more specific, at our office it means being in the office.

You might wanna test that, because when it comes down to having nothing stamped versus letting the PLS outside sometimes I've never seen a company not choose the latter.?ÿ Besides, it's horrible practice to have a PLS lose touch with the fieldwork side of things, imo.

@bill93?ÿ

For fun, we used to put together a box or sack full of miscellaneous items for each of the daughters once they were out on their own.?ÿ It grew to be a joke.?ÿ The contents were typically things that businesses give away such as calendars, note pads, pens, pencils, letter openers, mugs, apples, oranges and assorted items unique to whatever their business might be.?ÿ They each got identical items to the extent possible.?ÿ It all came to a halt after one daughter decided SHE needed the calendar that her younger sister had received.?ÿ They bickered the rest of the day.?ÿ When the younger one got home, she discovered her sister had switched the calendars while she wasn't looking.?ÿ She was NOT HAPPY. (Not sure which dwarf she was, but it wasn't Happy).?ÿ We stopped after that episode.

@jaccen?ÿ

?ÿ

They will, initially, tell you that they are not supported.?ÿ And their tech support will be minimized as they can now, by default, just blame the other party.?ÿ For example, we have had the following experiences:

-we, initially, asked Smartnet (ie. Leica) if we could run Carlson gear on their network.?ÿ They said anything non-Leica was not supported.?ÿ Fair enough.?ÿ We did not investigate further (which was a mistake IMO).

-a local construction layout company uses Topcon equipment (ie. with Magnet) and they run both Topnet and Smartnet.

-we used to solely run Topnet.?ÿ We found that coverage in more remote areas was poor here in SW Ontario.?ÿ We have a guy who *strongly* prefers the colour yellow so we went w/ Cannet as our secondary network.

-when we had issues, Cannet said the equipment was not their problem.?ÿ No follow up.?ÿ Horizon Measurements (ie. the Canadian Carlson dealer) said that they could not help with the specifics of Cannet, but they would do the following:

a. give us a loaner

b. get Cannet working for us from their office

So, tech support-wise, one definitely was more willing to help than the other.?ÿ Note this is just our personal experience and not indicative of Cannet as a whole.?ÿ We are a small shop so I get that we may "fall off the radar."

-I just messed with the settings on Sunday while watching the kids 'til it fixed.?ÿ I still think I can get the VRS solution working, but that's next weekend's problem.

-CMRx, while Trimble proprietary, is used by many other manufacturers.?ÿ It is the format we typically use when doing a UHF setup.?ÿ We have used it for the following combo's:

a. Hemisphere S320 as a base w/ BRX7 as a rover using CMRx

b. BRX7 as a base and BRX7 as a rover using CMRx

-we typically use ROX for UHF when using an S320 for a base and an S320 for a rover.

-Carlson has told us that firms in Ontario use all 3 of the major RTN's with their equipment.?ÿ Some *individual firms* use all 3 depending on how the coverage is.

-it's a bit of a pain, but you can mix and match most equipment as long as you:

a. get the message type matching (ie. 1000-1013 for the legacy; any of the MSM 5+ ones if possible)

b. frequency (ie. if you're doing UHF)

c. "language" (ie. RTCM, CMRx, etc.)

d. matching P & C/A codes, L1/L2, etc. (ie. this is usually done via the message type and turning options on/off either via the webgui or the data controller).

?ÿ

For example, many farmers mix cheaper Emlid bases w/ Trimble ag products:

https://community.emlid.com/t/my-m2-project-trimble-base-station/23770

For that one, he had to wire up his own 1008 injector.?ÿ Emlid now does it via software.?ÿ They have even made a concentrated effort to make it so that you can set up an Emlid as the base, set up an Emlid caster (10 bases for *free* is pretty awesome), and connect to it w/ a Trimble rover:

https://community.emlid.com/t/reach-rs2-base-trimble-rover/30201

?ÿ

Typically, it is easier to mix and match when doing RTN work (whether that be on a commercial RTN or if you set up a local one).

?ÿ

One of our "skunkworks" projects is getting the following setup for rural work:

a. bring in a point w/ the RTN (ie. a 10 minute average RTK shot if the residuals are poo)

b. bring in a check shot w/ the RTN (ie. same setup as above)

c. set up the Emlid base on one of them with a local RTN (this could even be a mount on a field truck if the truck won't move--easier to prevent base theft)

d. log RINEX for either a PPP or a static baseline tightening/check on the base

e. connect the BRX7 to the local RTN

?ÿ

Note that this is only possible where cell reception is good.?ÿ It solves the baseline distance problem, but not the cell coverage problem.?ÿ Personally, I have always found mixing and matching things w/ UHF to be more difficult so that is why we are focusing on a local RTN setup.

?ÿ

?ÿ

As to your comment about wanting a BRX7 and a 1203+..........uh, just get a Carlson setup.?ÿ The CR+ and CRx series are just Geomax units with a different sticker for the most part.?ÿ What you described is what we are running (BRX7 plus CR5+ plus Cannet).?ÿ When used with Hybrid, it's a pretty good bang-for-buck setup.

?ÿ

As Yogi told BooBoo, "My mother was smarter than the average bear."

Mom would buy us ONE candy bar that she knew both my sister and I would enjoy.?ÿ Then she applied the rule that one of us got to cut it in half on the cutting board and the other one got to choose the first "half".?ÿ I learned that if I would angle the knife just a wee bit so that the far side (her side) appeared to be a little bigger than half, she would grab that piece every time.?ÿ But, when she did the cutting, I always took the smaller half or I knew bad things would be in my future.?ÿ When you are like 6 1/2 and she is 13, there's no winning for the little guy.

@bstrand i have seen it all for sure. ?ÿI even have witnessed once licensed they the company would have a fit if the LS did any production type work. They wanted that LS to do nothing but bid jobs. He had his hands tied because they didnƒ??t truly get the whole being in responsible charge thing. When I worked for him he would pull me to the side often saying please tell me whatƒ??s going on with this job. Very seldom did the cad guy even ask for advice on boundary issues. I did my best as non licensed guy asking questions on what they held and why so I could keep him updated. I know many times he did lots of checks at home on his own computer. So they would not catch him. He would call me often on jobs at night. That is a company i set temp points offsets of where I thought corners should be if i didnƒ??t find them. Hubs and tacks. Several i went back to and set correctly for the ls because the drafter used math only but. I have to re learn all that now days. Been a way so long.

@350rocketmike lol. Gotcha. Well I have no idea what state or your age. Take it from me do not be afraid of college. Not all states require a BS degree. And I am the first to tell you I am not college material. I forced myself in every class. Maybe do the CST things at first at your own pace even though you do not now desire to be licensed. ?ÿBecause Construction staking does not look that good from my perspective for surveyors in future. It will probably be phases that will but technology is far between. I have a project now that out of thousands of points we have staked a couple hundred. Every thing else is as built and material certified so contractor gets paid. So we are just topo and mapping really. I just computed a hundred points for us to stake for contractor and all he wants is a paint dot just i. Some surrounding areas for a visual check as machines run. I said why donƒ??t i set stakes no need just need to make sure he sees the areas is all. Ok is all i fan say.

@jaccen well lets just say he was and he did above and beyond keeping his reputation and seal covered but the engineers did not see it that way they saw if he was checking data and being involved with field and office work he was not bringing money in. I am thankful i was not a full time employee but was hired more as a consultant on specific jobs to teach survey controller back the. And rtk work. It was not where i wanted to be but i was impressed at the hoops the LS went through in order to maintain responsible charge under the radar. ?ÿThis place as far as i know went under or whatever. He had left and they could not keep a ls. ?ÿBut we all know sometimes we go to a place and after being at it the truth reveals itself and become a shock. As a old trainer for Trimble I was blown away at what some people did for years daily. There are some great professionals out there and a few bad apples. I have seen the bad apples. I honestly thought i would never return to private sector doing Land Surveying again after the big recession. I saw so many people I looked up to just make choices that were totally against why i loved the surveying profession. ?ÿI lost my home during that recession. And when the bank came and i handed over my keys and walked the property the man looked at me and said son never change. I had the house cleaned everything was in working order. He said he saw people good people destroy the inside of houses steal cabinets pipes everything. I said itƒ??s not the banks fault i lasted with my e fund for as long as I could worked doing whatever I could from selling firewood to delivering pizza and i just couldnƒ??t find anything to help pay bills. I guess good surveyors had to make choices as well. ?ÿLike not setting corners because of budget or pencil whipping things. Itƒ??s a choice. ?ÿNow i am doing the two things besides my family i love. Raising cows making hay farming and back in Land Surveying. ?ÿI do miss the geodetic stuff but enjoying every minute of what I am doing now. Not as much money but I am not worried about that as I hope i have set myself and family up to never go through what i did in the recession. I cleaned horse stalls. ?ÿMowed grass whatever would make a dollar.

@jaccen?ÿ

I would definitely prefer that setup but the company has invested a lot in Trimble the last few years so there is no going back now. Sx12, 2 s5's a 2" s7, multiple r12i (including the one I just recieved) and 6 tsc7's. He wants to eliminate the multiple brands for simplicity. We used to have fieldgenius, magnet field and Trimble.?ÿ

@olemanriver?ÿ

Sorry about the rough times you went through. I didn't have a home yet to lose but I was in a lot of debt not too long ago, poor $ management skills, poor choice in women, and not a lot of income. First few years of surveying I worked a second job at Goodyear on Saturday as a service advisor and mowed lawns on the side also. Eventually I realized I would make more $ working overtime surveying since we were swamped with work and time a half kicks in so I gave up the part time work and just worked lots of hours whenever needed.?ÿ

I'm glad to have this job now and a wide that keeps me on budget. I also never thought I would own a home.?ÿ

@olemanriver?ÿ

I just pinned another townhouse and single home today, builders are still building houses right through the winter. We usually have 3 visits, staking for excavation and a cut stake for the underside of footing elevation, then pinning for footings, then final visit a final survey. Some builders want a 4th visit (nails on footings for foundation walls) but some do their own staking for excavation, so average 3 visits. It will slow down a little bit over winter as far as layout goes, but everything takes twice as long now that everything is buried in snow.?ÿ

We're in a housing boom, people are moving from the big city to here, so it's very hard to keep up with the construction layout. I do more than just construction layout though, tomorrow I'm doing another plot plan survey for future construction on a rural lot, we do quite a bit of these and they do usually want layout for the actual construction, then we have to shoot all the final grading for a "grading certificate".?ÿ

I do some topos and boundary locates also but they try to give me the easier jobs to get practice. I haven't gotten into severances yet or more complicated jobs.?ÿ
