The road into the valley was called the steepest paved road in the country. I can believe it!
I've hiked into it and driven down it. Driving is far preferable at my age, I do suggest a 4:1 rear end.?ÿ
The black sand beach and giant waterfalls make the trek worth it even if you are walking.?ÿ
Funny coincidence. I was just reading that in one of my Big Island guide books and I'll be in that area this coming Saturday for a week. Planning on doing some hiking around the Waipi'o valley and scoping out the trail to the Waimanu valley. Apparently the 46' Tsunami did a good job of wiping out a good part of this valley along with everyone in it and I presume that there isn't a lot for surveyors to go on to try and reestablish those original boundaries. The land system there has a very different history than the mainland being based on the original Hawaiian land system of Ahupua'a which divided lands into pie shaped delineations often based on drainages to included both uplands and lowlands. From what I've read the authorities really don't want to deal with the issues in the valley and residents are usually left to sort things out themselves and it's not unheard of for places to get burned down. Not the kind of surveying work I'm interested in getting involved in.
Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
