My boss picked up a Leica TS13 along with a Carlson Surveyor 2, I've been learning how to use it over the course of the last couple days but Set Collection has me confused, in the Carlson I have the settings on Robotic, and when I try it out it reads the BS, plunges the scope spins around and reads the BS again, it's not even prompting me to search for the FS. Does anyone have experience with these? The Carlson manual isn't exactly step by step in Set Collection mode.

My memory of using SurvCE is somehow you give it a list of foresights beforehand similar to the SDR software. But that may have changed.

I only have the SurvPC manual for v6 but in section 6.16 Set Collection (pg 362) it tells how to change the set order.?ÿ It seems like your's is currently set to BD-BR/FR-FD.?ÿ Set order really comes down to how you like to work.?ÿ

Equip / Configure / Sets.?ÿ You can set it up however you are used to.?ÿ Carlson Technical Support is THE BEST.?ÿ Don't be afraid to call them.

I'm not real familiar with SurvCE. But I do have an acquaintance with?ÿ a number of other dc softwares. They all have settings for the order of set measurements, and the number of sets to be turned.

The version I used had a thing where you had to create a list of foresights before you start.

Not to reveal my age but in ancient times with a transit you'd wind up angles and repeat with an inverted 'scope to get down to seconds of accuracy.?ÿ Then T-2 type theodolites where you'd do several pairs of direct and inverted angle observation sets and average.?ÿ Distances were made with a carefully calibrated tape.?ÿ Then internal EDM distance measurements through the 'scope improved distance measurements to ppm accuracy. Then electronic internally compensated 'scopes showed up with target detection where two direct rounds were good enough, especially concerning the vertical.?ÿ Then total stations where you didn't even look in the 'scope, the machine did its rounds and reported a solution.?ÿ Then you didn't have to be at the 'scope and it would real time establish your target location by radio at the target.?ÿ Now it's GPS solutions with no optical equipment, albeit at lesser accuracy in the range of +-0.04' horizontally and 0.10' vertically in small locales.

If you're worried about doubling angles with a modern Total Station you're pursuing a chimera.?ÿ The only inaccuracy could be a significant shift in the instrument's position/orientation on the tripod during observation.

@mike-marks

The biggest inaccuracy is the loose nut behind the eyepiece.

Unless the instrument is recording the angles, there is always the possibility (probability?) of writing down the wrong digit.  A double, at least, will tell you if you really blew it.  And the small difference in seconds doesn't count.

Being the foresight you're about to double to is an unknown point, how do you provide a list of points?

@stephen-ward

It's set to Robotic Sets, which is supposedly the same thing

In the case of new points, I think you just supply the new point numbers and it assigns the measurements accordingly.  I use the SurvCE sets routine regularly, but I've only done 1 FS at a time so not positive about this, but I believe that's the way it works.

I use access and Trimble S7. For round turning I can set any combo of round I prefer in the options screen. As for turning rounds with a robot It has kinda lost?ÿ a portion of the reason for turning a set. I was always under the impression the rounds were more for the human error in sighting. ?ÿ

@dave-lindell

he is using a robot, I am pretty sure, it's recording the hor/ver/dist/temp etc.

unless you are doing 1st order triangulation, direct/rev really is a waste of time with today's modern ts. to avoid any errors between direct/rev observations, have your ts calibrated regularly.

but then, traingulation has been replaced by gps in 90% of the world's survey work? even 3rd world countries have adopted gps in their control surveys.

I never turned sets with a total station except for resections until I started using a robot.?ÿ My first robot was a Topcon 9003 with TopSurv on a FC-2500.?ÿ It had a real bad habit of chasing mirrors, reflective strips, crows carrying shiny objects.?ÿ On several occasions it got distracted just as I pressed the button to take a reading and stored a bad horizontal angle.?ÿ I began taking forward and reverse shots on all control, corners, and any other shots that mattered.?ÿ The Topcon settled down once I switched to SurvCE and my Trimble robots have never returned a bad angle but I still take forward and reverse shots.?ÿ It's just too easy with a robot and it has helped my spot errors on several occasions.

@stephen-ward

but isn't there an error trap algorithm in SurvCE? It compares not just the turned angles but also the distances and point name to determine if it indeed shot the same point.

@jt50

Yeah, there's a tolerance that can be set for points that are within 0.xx of each other but that wasn't the issue.  TopSurv seemed to stream the data and just grab the latest reading when you hit the store button.  SurvCE on the other hand would get a fresh reading after you hit the store button.  TopSurv's approach was faster but prone to errors if the instrument got distracted.  I had a case where the vertical angle and slope distance were correct with a horizontal angle that was off by several degrees.  When I moved forward and checked the backsight it worked because the slope and vertical angle were correct but my traverse busted by 20 feet in a 400-500 ft traverse.  Forward and reverse shots would have shown the blown angle before I ever moved forward.

I figured it out, just took a little time ???? This Robotic stuff was a little tricky for this guy that started off with a Lietz BT20 ???œ?ÿ
