@holy-cow

Old joke about the guy that tried to be a rancher in someplace like Las Animas County.?ÿ He kept finding his livestock dead and hanging in the only fence on the place.?ÿ He called the county ag agent to see if he could shed some light on the deaths.

After an inspection of the forlorn scenery the agent told the rancher to take down the fence as it was definitely a case of suicide.?ÿ

Probably the same place where the lonesome and very horny rooster would pretend to be dead.?ÿ His goal was to nail a buzzard when it came down to get him.

I tried to find it on GE and wasn't successful....but there's a homestead somewhere up there between Trinchera and Trinidad where the dirt Las Animas Co. section line road looks like it's heading straight for a house and barn...for a good long ways.

Sure enough, when you get there there's just enough room between the house and barn for a two lane gravel road to squeak through.?ÿ My brother and I use to joke about the owner getting hit on his way from the house to the barn...by the only car that had been by there in a week.

I have witnessed severe weather; out side of a hurricane, I've seen it all.?ÿ

And by far; It never got under 90 at night and the humidity would rot a T-shirt off your back by noon; was the worst weather I have ever endured...

Here's a similar situation.?ÿ A one-mile long road running along the quarter section line except when the road curves around the barn that is south of the house.

That's almost a "drive-thru" barn for sure.

I was working on US 59 south of West Siloam Springs some time back and was recovering section corners along a road called "South State Line Rd." .

One of my references didn't have a very good sketch, but listed a "porch post" being less than 15' away from the corner.?ÿ I found the likely residence and encountered a young boy on the porch.?ÿ I started to explain why I was there and the boy opened the screen door and hollered to his father there was a surveyor there...

It was a little backwoodsy around there (cue banjo music) so I was prepared for anything.?ÿ A guy came out of the house, told me to hang on for a minute, and he went and fired up a ratty old gin pole truck.?ÿ In less than a minute he had chained up a wrecked car with no wheels and dragged it backwards about 20'.

He walked up to a spot that had been covered up by the wreck and kicked around until a pin and cap became visible.?ÿ " 'zthat whucher lookin fer?" he asked.

Yes it was.?ÿ ?ÿI thanked him.?ÿ He apologized for covering it up.?ÿ The tie to the porch post was spot on.

The storm backed up and hit us last night and this morning. Nothing like they got south of here, they are still digging out and getting more. I had visitors scheduled to stop by the house so I was up early with my shovel in hand. I figured is was about 4" of snow so I grabbed the pusher and went about 10 feet and that was it.?ÿ

If you've ever pushed wet concrete it's basically the same.?ÿ

An hour or so later and I cleaned the drive and a path to the door. I'll leave the rest for tonight.?ÿ

I would die in 99% humidity and 96 degrees in about 45 minutes. Always wanted to see the Indy 500 live until I learned that the normal humidity and temp on race day are 85/85. I experienced that once in Mazatlan and barely made it... I was just out shoveling last night's 6" at 27 deg. and felt fine - didn't need a coat.

@jim-in-az

Around here we can get both temperature extremes, hot and cold, plus more humidity than the remainder of the state.?ÿ -22 to 115.?ÿ The primary difference is that our temperatures fluctuate frequently enough to provide relief.?ÿ If the Gulf air mass can overpower the cold air mass rolling southeastward from the Rockies things warm up.?ÿ When the situation reverses, things cool down.?ÿ When a polar blast dominates the center of the US we can get very cold for a little while.?ÿ Then the Gulf overpowers and we can get too hot in a matter of days.

Less than a week before the big freeze we had last month we had temps over 70.?ÿ Then we dropped as low as -22.?ÿ Within two weeks after that we had another day in the 70's and the jonquils/daffodils were shooting up.
