Anyone know the difference between the 5218-02 standard Thumb Release model and the 5218-40 "Construction Series" tripods. Seems to have the same thumb release, the same extension, same tube sizes, but a lot less money. Gotta be a reason.

Can't speak to your questions, but I have gone to the McHenry style
bipods and knob locking poles. I am tired of having to adjust the
tension on the thumb release versions and having the collet locking
poles slip. Also, I replace the standard bubbles with 8' ones.

I don't see any differences either.

-40 comes with 2 piece, 6 sided foot points, -02 comes with one piece conical points? I see no other difference.

The construction thumb-release tripod is certainly lighter duty in construction, especially the head assembly. That being said, the inner leg assemblies will give out long before either head assembly fails so the cost difference to me isn't worth it. I would recommend construction grade.

Thanks for the input. I would have thought that the construction environment would be more stressful on equipment than the land surveying environment, but I guess not. This will get very light duty, so I'll take a look at one.
