The clue read: Boundary marker.
The word had five letters.
Eventually I found the first letter to be "F".
Then it turned out the last letter was "E".
It took some effort, but finally I had the crossing words finished and discovered the answer was : FENCE.
I had to laugh.

I work the crossword puzzle everyday in our local paper, but I haven't run across that one.
